Yesterdays trip out to Seal Eiland was enjoyed by everyone.
Weather was good, sea was fine and no problems were experienced.After safety briefing we proceeded to sea and did drift fishing at first as the wind was very light.
this was successful for a time, until the fish stopped biting.We then move off to the next reef to try,
After some time we moved off to the eiland, home to many marine birds and the Cape fur seal.
Sounds more like a barn yard with the noise of the seals and has the smell to go with it.We moved around on a few anchors to get some decent fish,but the elusive red roman wasn’t biting.Sort after eating fish.
Philippe and his son did very well in landing their fish and you could see that they were experienced fishing people by their actions.
I use traditional line fisherman as deck crew and apart from doing deck work they also interact with clients to assist, answer questions and tell fishy stories.
We did a closeup ride around the eiland for a better view and pics, before returning to harbour in Kalk Bay on a stern sea, which makes for a very pleasant ride.
Hopefully the big pelagics arrive soon, like the amberjack yellowtail and then the fun will be really on.
Everyone got safely back to harbour and it was really great to get out to sea with such pleasant guys like Philippe and his son.

The summer time is usually the favorite fishing time, however you have to contend with the notorious south easter wind.One day it’s on and the next it’s off and lots of times you have four seasons in a day.
Winter time has sofar proved more productive, especially with the fish we were targeting, namely bottoms, like roman, cob, also called snapper salmon, bream and silvers or commonly called panga.A very underrated fish which unknown to many people is used by many chefs for their sashimi.
Drift fishing was out of the question on the day as there was already about 8 knots of south wind when we left the harbour, headed to seal island, which was the best choice at the time as you can anchor in the quiet water in the lee of the island. Fish were a bit shy but they did start to come up.Sizes weren’t too big however we take what is on offer, as we can’t unfortunately order our fish, even less the sizes.
We did what we could of a windy situation and got a good few species landed.Namely roman, bream, panga, among the edibles and blowfish, barble, pajama shark among the non edibles.
Sizes were adhered to and undersized fish were carefully released.The trip was extended to 13:30 in the hope of landing bigger fish, but unfortunately the south wind started to increase and we had to return to harbour.
I consider the trip to be successful as we landed fish, although the sizes were moderate.
We went out and returned safely back to harbour, would just like to add that all the guys handled themselves very well, which surprised me as the sea conditions weren’t the best.
I conclude with a saying I heard a while back, better than a poke in the eye with a frozen carrot.
