Trip Summary

The full moon, low tides and record high temperatures made for some challenging fishing. Bait was plentiful though, so we loaded up the livewell with pilchards, and along with some shrimp from the bait shop we had plenty of options. The day started out windy so we headed out to the bayou and positioned the boat among the mangroves, putting the wind at our back. We started by pitching live pilchards under a popping cork rig as close to the mangroves as possible. Using this technique, we caught feisty snook and redfish one after another. These were all undersized but we were catching and that's always fun. Didn't take long before we landed a monster 30-inch redfish that fought all the way to the boat. We thought our luck had turned but after that behemoth, the action died down but so did the wind, so we headed out to the various spoil islands around John's Pass. Using the same pilchards and popping cork rig, we caught a few more redfish including a 34-inch beast that made the day. As the action at the spoil islands cooled, we decided to take advantage of the lighter winds and headed south into Boca Ciega Bay to try our shrimp under the docks. Using cut shrimp on a hook we finished the day with several more slot-sized redfish and black drum. Given the conditions, we were anticipating a long, slow day. But as always, the right bait on the right rig, (along with the favor of the fishing gods) rewarded us with a fantastic day of catching!
