When you think of Costa Rica, your mind probably conjures up an image of golden beaches, crystal clear waters, and luscious greenery full of exciting wildlife. Well, Playa Flamingo has all that. This popular beach town separates the mountains from the ocean, meaning there’s stunning scenery wherever you look. What better way to discover it all than aboard one of the numerous Playa Flamingo fishing charters?
 
Your first port of call – after the actual port, of course – will be the inshore bays. The town actually sticks out onto a peninsula, splitting two bays, where you’ll find a whole host of exotic and exciting fish. Take on Roosterfish, Snook, and Jacks in the shallows, while Snappers, Groupers, Mackerel, and Amberjack will be on the menu along the reefs.
 
However, any angler worth their salt will have come to town for one reason – the big game options. Playa Flamingo lies just 20 miles from the continental shelf. Head offshore, and you can take on Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and prized Billfish, such as Sailfish and Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin!
 
Families and beginners can take advantage of shorter trips in the bays to get to grips with rods and reels, and you can even mix it up with some snorkeling, too. Offshore adventures tend to start at eight hours, with the option of spending up to a few days on the water for those who want to get the most out of fishing in Playa Flamingo.

Enero

Strong winds make getting offshore difficult but there’s plenty of action in the shallows. Roosterfish and Snook are biting hard in the river mouths while Mackerel and Jacks hunt in the bays.

Febrero

The deep sea fun can still be patchy in February. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s not, you can chase monster Roosterfish and Snook in the shallows instead.

Marzo

Jack Crevalle, Snook, Roosterfish, and Sierra Mackerel are all on form this time of year. The reefs are always productive and the offshore bite gets more reliable as the winds start to die down.

Abril

April is the hottest month of the year in Costa Rica. It’s also the last of the dry season, so make the most of the sunny skies and hit the water for a deep sea or inshore sight fishing trip.

Mayo

The big game season really gets going in May, with Sailfish, Black and Blue Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo. You couldn’t ask for a better cast of characters!

Junio

All your favorite pelagic predators are going strong offshore while the reefs start filling up with tasty Red and Cubera Snappers. Inshore, there are always some Roosters and Snook to fight.

Julio

Locals commemorate Guanacaste’s annexation to Costa Rica from Nicaragua on the 25th. That’s not the only thing worth celebrating – Blue Marlin are in their prime this time of year!

Agosto

The Presidential Flamingo Fishing Rodeo is the biggest event in the Playa Flamingo fishing calendar. Anglers join from across the country and far beyond to take on the area’s huge Billfish.

The rains are at their heaviest in September, taking the humidity through the roof. Escape offshore to get some air or jump in the water after battling Snook and Roosterfish inshore.

Octubre

The rains dump all kinds of flotsam into the water, making the perfect hunting grounds for big Mahi Mahi. Turn these predators into your prey and enjoy some amazing FAD fishing offshore!

Noviembre

Can’t face another Turkey this year? Hit the reefs to reel in Cubera Snapper, Broomtail Grouper, and Amberjack instead. You’re in for a real feast after one of these thrilling nearshore trips.

Diciembre

February fishing is not one of the best fishing months of the year. However, we were in Playa Flamingo for 11 days and went on 3 fishing trips and had really great luck for all 3. February for us turned out great! We brought our own surf poles, but had no luck. I recommend fishing with a local guide.

pay a little more if you want more variety and gamers. we went for Dorado (mahi mahi) and tuna. we hit Dorado during our trip and were happy because all 6 of us caught fish! it's one of the only charters I could find in this price range for 5 hours. most others were 4 hours for the same price. crew made it effortless. highly recommend! Also saw a lot of Dolphins and Leatherback Sea Turtles as an added bonus!

Great experience, very knowledgeable and friendly captain and first mate. They recommended to target yellow fin tuna as other species weren’t as hot at this time. Able to get us on a school of tuna quickly. 5 hour tour, 1 hour out, equals 3-3.5 hours of fishing. Got to sample some of our catch out on the boat, they even had soy sauce and wasabi, can’t get any fresher sashimi than that! Overall great experience!

Captain and crew mate did a great job of putting us on the yellowfin tuna. 5 hour tour. 1 hour out and 1 hour back equals 3 hours of fishing. In that amount of time I caught 8 yellowfin! These guys worked their butts off to get me on the fish. 2-4 lines in the water at all times. If I’m ever back to Costa Rica I will definitely book again. Highly recommend these guys. Thanks El Gato!!!

Captain Luis got us on a feeding frenzy of Yellow Fin Tuna. Thousands of Bottle nose Dolphins and sea birds were all feeding on the same bait ball as the Tuna. They are fun and super aggresive biters. 10 minute fight everytime you hook up. What Great fun. Thanks that was cool... Sushi :)

Our family of 5 had so much fun on the Sea Hunter 1 with Victor and Byron. We caught tuna, yellowtail jack, pompano, and blue runner. We are beginners, so they were patient with us and showed us different techniques for catching the fish. Byron cleaned and filleted our fish and we were able to take it to a nearby restaurant to cook. We highly recommend a fishing trip with Sea Hunter 1!

Had an absolutely great time with Captain Luis and Sandy. They clearly take a lot of pride of ownership in their boat. We started slow, but ended up catching two sailfish. One was a monster!!! When things were slow Captain Luis added additional lures and other things to get the fish biting. It clearly worked.
