Pesca en Roatan

You couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place for your next vacation than Roatan. The island is one long strip of lush vegetation, with soft white sands flowing into unbelievably clear seas. Even by Honduran standards, it’s got “wish you were here” written all over it.

Honduras’s Bay Islands are famous among divers for their colorful reefs and exotic fish. Somehow, Roatan fishing still doesn’t have anywhere near the same fame, but that’s sure to change. The island seems custom-built for sportfishing, whether you want to wrestle monsters in a few inches of water or take to the sea in search of Billfish. You’re never more than a few casts from the action in this island paradise.

But wait, there’s more. Roatan may be out of the ordinary as a vacation spot, but it’s hardly out of the way. It’s only a 2-hour flight from Miami and is a regular stop-off for cruise ships. Add the fact that most people speak at least some English, and you have a hassle-free adventure in a stunning location with world-class fishing. What more could you want?

Types of Fishing

You’ve got plenty of options as to how you spend your trip. The island is surrounded by fishing spots and even the best ones are just a short cruise away. Here are the main ways you can spend your time:

Roatan Deep Sea Fishing

Honduras means “depths” in Spanish, and the waters around Roatan are plenty deep enough for some serious bluewater battles. You can be fishing in 1,000 feet of water less than 5 miles from shore around most of the island. Blue Marlin top the list of Roatan’s big game species, but they’re not alone. Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and several species of Tuna call these waters home all year round.

Roatan Flats Fishing

With mile after mile of pristine flats and thriving grass beds, Roatan has more than its share of shallow-water action. The water is so clear here that boats look like they’re hanging in mid-air. This makes for incredible sight-fishing for the resident Bonefish and Permit. Hit the mangroves, and you can also find some decent-sized Tarpon and monster Snook.

If every fish on the IGFA Inshore Grand Slam list isn’t enough for you, don’t worry. Triggerfish come so far in to feed that they can be seen tailing in the shallows. Outlandish Rainbow Parrotfish well over 20 lb hunt along the deep edge of the flats. Barracuda are always around to add some bite to your fight. You could spend a lifetime fishing here and never get bored.

Roatan Reef Fishing

You can’t visit Roatan without taking a trip to the reefs. We mean that literally. The corals start within swimming distance of shore and completely surround the island. It’s not a case of quantity over quality, either. This is a marine park and one of the most well-protected sections of the entire Mesoamerican Reef. You can hook into a huge range of fish, from Groupers and Snappers to Amberjack and hard-fighting Horse-Eye Jack.

Fishing Techniques

With Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon, and Snook all within easy reach, the fly fishing Roatan has to offer is simply unmissable. Pack a sturdy 8-wt for stalking the flats, with something a little heftier for mangrove battles against trophy Silver Kings and Snook. Most big game action focuses on trolling, although kites are starting to show up in the skies offshore.

One thing you’ll never find here is spearguns. Even fishing with slings is banned without a special permit. Some local enthusiasts do hunt for invasive Lionfish, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a guide offering this style of fishing.

Need to Know

So you’re ready for your Roatan fishing adventure? You won’t be disappointed! Here some final travel tips to make your visit even easier.

Rules & Regulations

You don’t need a fishing license to fish in Roatan. You do need to be aware of where you’re wetting your line, though. The entire island is considered a marine park and there are restrictions on if and how you can fish in certain places. Heading out with a guide is the easiest way to catch big fish while following the rules.

Charter Rates

Taking on the ocean’s top gamefish isn’t as expensive as you might think. A half day trip costs around $450. Full days are even better value, usually around $700-800 for a basic boat. Even the fanciest sportfisher in town doesn’t cost more than $1,200 for the day.

Getting There

Many of Roatan’s visitors arrive on cruise ships taking a tour of the Caribbean. If you want something a little more direct, you can catch a flight from Miami, Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta, as well as various cities on the mainland.

Roatan has it all: island bliss with great fishing and an eye to keeping it that way. In fact, the island is so stunning and the fishing so good that it’s bound to become a sportfishing hub. Get in quick and be one of the lucky anglers who fished here before the crowds showed up!
