Fishing in soldotna

Soldotna is a microcosm of America’s “Last Frontier.” This small river town, located on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, embodies the true spirit of adventure, leaving tourists breathless by her pristine beauty. Visitors from all over the US visit Soldotna to experience some of the best freshwater fishing that this region has to offer. With easy access to Cook Inlet, it also produces excellent saltwater opportunities, putting fishing in Soldotna at the top of every angler’s bucket list.

Top Fishing Spots

This area’s combination of freshwater and saltwater fishing make Soldotna a prime location for outdoorsmen and adventure-seekers of all experience levels. Here’s a quick look at some top picks!

The Kenai River

Soldotna is located on the Kenai River, home to some of the most renowned Salmon fishing in the world. As such, it’s  Alaska’s most popular sportfishing destination and is frequently regarded as one of the top go-to spots for avid fishermen.

In 1985, the world record for King Salmon was caught off the banks of the Kenai River in Soldotna, weighing in at 97 pounds and 4 ounces. On average, Kenai Chinook weigh anywhere between 30–45 pounds, so the chances of catching a big King are pretty good. Other top catches include Coho, Sockeye, Pink, and Chum Salmon, as well as Rainbow Trout.

Lakes

Soldotna fishing guides also have access to some of the most productive lakes on the Kenai peninsula. These lakes are brimming with freshwater species, such as Grayling, Arctic Char, Dolly Varden, Northern Pike, and Rainbow and Lake Trout.

Among these lakes is Skilak Lake, a very popular sportfishing destination for many Alaskans. It’s located in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, only about a half-hour drive from Soldotna.

Cook Inlet

Cook Inlet forms a 180-mile stretch of watershed which the Kenai River feeds into. This large basin is home to a wide range of saltwater fish, including all five species of Pacific Salmon, Halibut, Lingcod, Rockfish, Steelhead, and Herring.

Cook Inlet provides excellent inshore as well as offshore opportunities for all types of anglers. Whether you’re looking for a short trip close to shore or a full-day, deep-sea excursion, Soldotna fishing guides will cater your trip based on your preferences.

Types of Trips

Trips vary from 5–10 hours, depending on the travel distance, fishing location, and target species. Shorter trips are a great way for families to introduce their kids to fishing or for beginners to go out and find their sea legs.

Longer trips allow you to cover more water and increase your likelihood of catching something. These trips are a great opportunity for experienced anglers to head offshore and try a few different techniques.

Soldotna fishing guides offer both private and shared trips. Shared trips are a great option if you’re unable to find enough people for a fishing trip, or would like to save some cash. Private trips will give you and your party a more personalized experience so you can enjoy the day with close friends and loved ones.

What You Need to Know

Residents over the age of 18 and non-residents over 16 must purchase either a freshwater or saltwater fishing license. You can buy one online by visiting the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website or at one of their local offices, as well as any local sporting goods or grocery store. Also, please note that if you plan on harvesting King Salmon, you’ll have to purchase an additional stamp as well.

Bait and tackle are usually included in the price, so just be sure to pack some snacks and drinks, as well as extra layers of clothing. We recommend contacting your guide who will provide you with any additional information you may need.

America’s Last Frontier is only one click away, so check out some of Soldotna’s fishing guides, choose your captain, and get ready to experience Alaska’s fishing firsthand.

soldotna Temporadas de Pesca

Enero

Cold months require a little more effort if you’re planning to go fishing out at sea, however, you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to target freshwater fish on the Kenai River or one of Soldotna’s many lakes.

Febrero

Snap out of the winter blues and book an ice fishing trip in Soldotna. You’ll have the chance to target Lake Trout, Arctic Char, and Northern Pike on one of the area’s surrounding lakes. While you’re here, be sure to check out Soldotna’s Frozen RiverFest!

Marzo

March produces solid opportunities for freshwater fish, such as Northern Pike and Lake Trout. Peak season for charter fishing is still a few months away but there are chances to target Rockfish and Halibut offshore, just be sure to keep an eye on the weather.

Abril

April marks the beginning of the Dolly Varden spring run, so get ready to take out the fly gear and head out to the Kenai River to target this elusive species. Steelhead fishing starts to pick up towards the end of the month as well, so don’t put that fly rod away just yet!

Mayo

Spring fishing gets kicked into high gear. Head offshore to target Halibut, Rockfish, and Herring or head down the Kenai River to target King Salmon, Steelhead, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Char.

Junio

Bottom fishing is known to produce excellent opportunities in June. This is when Halibut and Rockfish are at their peak and start to take the bait much more frequently than any other month. It’s also prime time for Kenai Kings so don’t don’t rule freshwater fishing out either!

Julio

Soldotna fishing is excellent in July, in terms of both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Lingcod start to show up in numbers throughout Cook Inlet, as well as Halibut and Rockfish. Trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic Char, and all five types of Pacific Salmon can be targeted throughout July.

Agosto

Happy days continue throughout August as anglers get to enjoy fishing in Cook Inlet as well as the Kenai River. You’ll have a chance to catch all five Pacific Salmon species, so book a full-day trip and head home with delicious fish for the family.

Septiembre

Soldotna hosts the Kenai River Women’s Classic in September each year to support habitat restoration and preservation, as well as to promote sustainable fishing practices. This is a great fundraising event and an awesome opportunity to enjoy fishing while supporting a great cause.

Octubre

October is your last opportunity to head offshore to target Rockfish, Halibut, and Lingcod. Be sure to check out Skilak Lake and challenge the Northern Pike bite on light tackle as well. While out there, you might also encounter Trout, Dolly Varden, and Char.

Noviembre

Winter is coming! This means ice fishing season is among us. Build a fire, drill a hole, and drop a line in search of Grayling, Arctic Char, and Northern Pike.

Diciembre

The winter season is in full swing, which means ice fishing in Soldotna is the name of the game. You can also still book a river guide to take you out looking for monster river fish for some action on light tackle.

Buy your license at Fred Meyer...very easy. If you catch a king salmon you will not be able to fish for the rest of the trip, but you can enjoy the boat ride.

book your fishing a bit earlier in the year than we did but don't be afraid of whenever you go. I would probably book more than one day if I were to do this again down the road. Be nice to go after some King Salmon.

We went sockeye fishing with Captain Dustin this weekend and had a BLAST! He was knowledgeable, patient with our skill level, and ensured we were having a great time. Before the trip, he made sure we had directions to the launch and was very communicative. Next time we want to fish, I'll definitely be reaching out to Dustin. We couldn't recommend him more for any level of angler looking to have a great time out on the water!

Knows the sport, the law, and the territory well and tries hard to adapt to conditions to get fish in the boat. Could use a little more explanation of what to do and expect up front for young or inexperienced clients and after action comments could be considered a little rushed or critical. He is heavy on the fishing and not as much on everything that goes with it. More experienced anglers would likely consider Dustin a 5 Star guide.

Taught us what we needed to know for fishing the Kenai River for Sockeye. We got our limit in a little less than a hour. That means he put us on the fish right away. He recommended the Kasilof River to do on our own since the limit wash 6 on that river, Kenai was only 3. I highly recommend the use of Captain D's charter for the novice to the advanced. Thanks Captain D for your knowledge. We got 6 in the Kasilof later that day. It was an amazing Day #1 of 7 for fishing.

Had a great experience with Dustin! We caught 30+ fishes within 2 hours because of Dustin’s amazing instructions and experience. He is also very communicative and responsive, with a great personality that just shines during the whole trip. He truly takes pride in what he is doing. If you are in the Kenai Peninsula, definitely give Dustin a call and set up a trip. Trust me, you will NOT regret.
