Fishing in Morro Bay

With sheltered waters inshore and an ocean of opportunities offshore, Morro Bay has it all. It's the ideal starting point for anyone looking to experience the incredible angling Central California has on offer. All you need to do to begin your adventure is to hop aboard one of the many Morro Bay fishing charters.

The fishing grounds along this part of the West Coast are renowned for their Rockfish angling. You'll find various spots both up and down the coast where you'll be able to catch these delicious fish. The species you can encounter include Cabezon, Boccaccio, Copper, Vermilion Rockfish, and more.

Besides Rockfish, there are other bottom fish, such as Lingcod and Halibut, that call these waters their home. And once you've caught your fill of these deep-dwellers, you'll also have the option to head offshore and fish for big game species such as Bluefin Tuna. Finally, if you visit between April and July, you'll also get to target Chinook Salmon as they make their run along the coast.

There are several marinas around Morro Bay that serve as departure points for local fishing charters. If you want to stay relatively close to shore and just reel in a few fish for dinner, a half day trip will do the trick. For those among you aiming to go offshore or catch trophy-sized fish, you'll need to hop on a full day charter.

Reglas & Regulaciones

Before you can cast a line in Morro Bay, you'll need to get a fishing license. This applies to anglers 16 and older, although a few exceptions exist. Also, many species such as Lingcod and Rockfish can't be targeted from boats before April 1. So if you want to experience everything Morro Bay has to offer, it's better to visit when the groundfish season opens.

Morro Bay Temporadas de Pesca

Enero

With Rockfish and Lingcod off the table, your choice of species will be limited if you fish from a boat. However, there's plenty of fish you can catch in the surf, including different types of Sharks, Rays, and Perch.

Febrero

Much like the previous month, February is all about shore fishing. Since regulations allow you to keep Rockfish and Lingcod if you reel them in from shore, it's all about finding the right hole to fish.

Marzo

March is the last month when sticking to the surf may pay off more than fishing from a boat. Leopard, Thresher, and Shovelnose Sharks, as well as Bat Rays, are possible catches, in addition to Barred Surfperch.

Abril

This is the month when the charter fishing season officially kicks off. Rockfish and Lingcod are once again in the cards, with Halibut playing the supporting role in this delicious trio. King Salmon may even show up sometime during April.

Mayo

With the summer approaching, the fishing only gets hotter and hotter. Expect a solid bite on the bottom with the Pacific Halibut season opening and more Salmon if you decide to do some trolling.

Junio

June marks the start of peak season in Morro Bay. Limits of Rockfish and Lingcod or catching a big Salmon – whatever you desire, you'll get. Offshore, you may even catch a Bluefin bite.

Julio

If you make your way north towards Big Sur, you'll get a shot at trophy Rockfish and Lingcod, or some Salmon. Offshore, Bluefin Tuna will be racing, making July one of the best times to reel in one of these brutes.

Agosto

Bluefin Tuna will still be in the area around this time of the year. It's all about finding a captain with their finger on the pelagic pulse. Of course, bottom fishing is always a good alternative.

Septiembre

The Tuna bite may start to slow down during September. However, the groundfish action is as good as ever. There's plenty of fish in the surf, as well, if you decide to fish from shore.

Octubre

The waters might be getting colder but the fish will still be there. Rockfish, Lingcod, and Halibut will still be biting, giving you the chance to reel in table fare fit for kings.

Noviembre

Mid-November is usually when the Pacific Halibut season closes unless the quotas fill before that. California Halibut, as well as other types of flatfish, can still be caught, though.

Diciembre

By the end of December, the groundfish season in this part of California will be closed for boaters. So head out for one last shot at Rockfish and Lingcod because the next time you get to fish for them from a boat will be in April.

Absolutely. We had good and favorable weather conditions. Don’t think I would go out under windy conditions.

It was a beautiful day on the water. Plenty of bait areas but the fish just weren’t biting. Captain Sergio pulled out all the stops with various lures, rigs, and bait. Had a few good hits but couldn’t land the halibut or salmon. We had a good experience fishing the Central Coast out of Morro Bay and will definitely recommend a charter trip on the Bent Rod with Captain Sergio at the helm.
