Nothing can quite describe the beauty of San Francisco – you have to see it for yourself. Passionate anglers would say that superb fishing opportunities significantly add to the city’s charm, and it’s true, the very identity of San Francisco lies in its surrounding waters. The good news is that you can always hire one of the many San Francisco fishing charters to take you out.

As one of the largest estuaries on the West Coast, San Francisco Bay is teeming with a wide array of fish species. The prize catches include Chinook (King) Salmon, Striped Bass, Halibut, Lingcod, Sturgeon, as well as a dozen Shark species. Many of these guys stick around all year, so whenever you visit the Golden City, there’ll be something to target.

Cast a line from one of San Francisco’s many piers for Flounder, Perch, Skates, Rays, and Rockfish. You could also try fly fishing for Surfperch along various stretches of the beach. Only a few miles from the city center, you will find rivers, lakes, creeks, and reservoirs, perfect for freshwater adventures. There, anything from Bass and Trout to Catfish is in the cards.

When you pick a charter to your liking, it’s time to choose that perfect trip, and the offer is very diverse. You can go for a half day excursion around the bay, catching a mixed bag along the way. Some guides organize specialized expeditions, so you spend your day chasing Salmon, bottom fishing, crabbing, and even spearfishing.

The most popular spot to find San Francisco fishing charters is by far the magnificent Fisherman’s Wharf.

Reglas & Regulaciones

Both freshwater and saltwater anglers over the age of 16 are required to have a valid California fishing license. Bear in mind that seasonality and regulations change annually. To make sure you're always fishing within the law, look for a reputable guide to lead the way.

Layer up for the weather. It was chili out on the ocean. There were a couple of extra jackets on the boat (and the captain offered my wife a blanket and pillow when she was falling asleep in the cabin) but it's always nice to have your own stuff. Sunblock!!!

Salmon fishing needs a long ride toward the ocean, so not very pleasurable for people susceptible to sea sickness. Prepare well before the trip, probably by limiting your meal before the trip and take some pills to combat the motion sickness. Wear thick clothes as well because it could be quite windy even in a sunny afternoon.

Fish with an experienced captain, like Craig Hanson. He knows the water, knows where the fish are likely to be, and has the correct tackle and bait.

Captain Ron and Hunter were fabulous! We were a low key, first time charter group. Ron made everything enjoyable. Hunter was on top of everything for us. Even during the storm we had fun and caught some nice fish. I would gladly charter Ron and Hunter again. We all had an amazing day. Thank you Captain Ron and Hunter.

First fishing experience and it was wonderful!! Captain Ron and Hunter were both very knowledgeable and skilled!! They knew where all the good spots were and they helped us first timers every step of the way. My whole family enjoyed the trip. We caught 10+ striped bass and 1 rock fish. Might end up doing a whole day trip next time to try our luck with salmon. Definitely recommend and will do again with other friends and family!

Captain David and Bradley were both awesome. We originally set out for salmon, but since it was the end of the season, didn't have much luck. We moved to rockfish in the afternoon and quickly caught our fill before going back for salmon and getting several bits. We had a great experience with them and plan on coming back with them again next year!

Captain David and his deck hand, Bradley were both wonderful fishing guides. They're down to earth and really know what they're doing. They set us up for success and we caught several halibut. We had a great time for our first fishing charter experience, and can't wait to try it again! I highly recommend booking your charter with them!

The day started off late due to bait guy waking up late, but once we got going we ran into unexpected wind and waves to the Plan A spot. Capt Ron went to Plan B, and my friends had a blast catching their full of bottomfish, and then Capt switched us to Plan C, catching a round of big salmon per rod that filled everyone's ice chest. A big thank you to Capt Ron and deckhand Hunter, they again put in the extra effort to make a memorable sucessfull day for us all. Randy-Sac Town

We had a group with little experience looking forward to enjoying the Bay. After a quick ride past the Golden Gate, Captain Dave set us up and we were catching fish immediately. Anytime it slowed down, we would move and we were finding more to catch. It was a great trip and we couldn’t have been any better supported by the crew! Thank you. We will be back.

The best way to find out if a boat captain and crew are good is to fish with them when fishing is tough. The fleet had very slow day fishing for salmon.. Capt. Ron and deck hand Hunter worked very hard to give us our best shot. We scratched out one nice king and were close to being high boat for the day. Boat is fast with a smooth ride. I plan to fish with tis crew again, i can only imagine how good we would do when the fish are in!
