Known For
Fishing in Bali is an interesting mixture of modern advances and native authenticity. Some captains prefer to fish from state of the art catamarans, while others run trips aboard local-built wooden boats, known as "jukungs." These small outrigger canoes are designed specifically for fishing and have been used by indigenous people here as long as anyone can remember.
Most Bali fishing charters are concentrated on the southern tip of the island. Giant Trevally, one of the most intense fighting fish in the sea, patrols this high, rocky coastline that looks out onto the Savu Sea. Want to try big game fishing? Travel just 15 miles from Denpasar, and you’ll be in waters as deep as 1,000 ft. This is prime hunting ground for big game fish such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Tunas, as well as reef dwellers such as Amberjack and Snappers.
From here, the seafloor just keeps dropping. The deeper you get, the higher the chance of Marlin, Sailfish, and more finding their way onto the end of your line. And all of this is still relatively undiscovered in the sportfishing community!
Types of Fishing
Most trips will take you either trolling or bottom fishing. More experienced anglers should try trolling the southern end of Nusa Penida Island, where you can target Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Narrow Barred Spanish Mackerel, and even Blue Marlin.
If you haven't fished before, or you want to take some fresh fish back to cook on the beach, try bottom fishing. You have a good chance of landing tasty Snappers and Groupers around Nusa Penida. Locals refer to bottom fishing as "coral fishing."
Up for a challenge? Test yourself against Giant Trevally by casting large poppers to the rocks around the coastline. Just be prepared for one of the most demanding fights of your life!
You can also catch Swordfish here, but you're unlikely to target it with rod and line. Instead, locals target this deep sea giant exclusively by handling! This may be best left to the local experts – but who are we to say?
Need to Know
Most fishing charters provide everything you need for your trip. It's always possible to bring your own gear, but be warned – tackle rental shops are few and far between on the island. You won’t need to worry about a fishing license, just make sure to have a comfy hat on and polarized sunglasses at the ready.
Snorkeling is often included in the charter, with equipment usually available on board. Don’t forget your swimwear!
