Freshwater Redfish? You bet! To anglers’ delight, this fish adapted to its new home and thrives in Calaveras Lake. The best time to catch them is from March–late August. The lake has great stocks of Largemouth and Spotted Bass, which peak from March–May. This is also the best time to go after Hybrid Striped Bass, although they are present in high numbers from January. If you’re up for some heavy-pounders, target Catfish year round.
Local fishing guides offer both morning and afternoon trips, so you can choose what feels best for you. Half day trips are more popular but you can also take an eight-hour adventure if you want to spend a whole day on the water. If you’re coming in May, be sure to book your spot in time – this is the busiest month of the year and charters sell out in advance. If the fishing action is better on Braunig Lake just 3 miles away, your guide may take you there instead.
