Pesca en Niagara River

Niagara River fishing is exciting – and how could it not be? Forming the border between the US and Canada, this powerful waterway was born out of the mighty Niagara Falls. An amazingly diverse fish population and year-round angling opportunities make it a magnet for freshwater aficionados. Pair that with breathtaking scenery and you’ve got the full package!

This body of water consists of two parts – the lower and the upper river. If you’re fishing the Lower Niagara River, you’ll come across coveted fish including Chinook and Coho Salmon, Lake and Brown Trout, Steelhead, and Walleye. The waters in the upper river are warmer, meaning you can add huge Muskellunge and Bass to your existing target list.

How long you decide to spend on the water will depend on when and what you’re fishing for. If you’re visiting in the fall, opt for a full day trip and take advantage of the legendary Salmon run. If you only have a half a day to spare, year-round targets like Trout and Walleye can provide you with some good action.

The Niagara River flows across 36 miles, and you’ll find fishing charters dotted all along the way. Some of the most popular and productive spots to fish include Fort Niagara State Park, Devil’s Hole, Strawberry Island, and Staley’s Reef.

Reglas & Regulaciones

If you’re heading out aboard a fishing charter, all of your gear will be provided. What you’ll be responsible for is buying a New York fishing license for all anglers over the age of 16. Remember, the Niagara River forms the border between the US and Canada. If you plan on drifting into Canadian waters be sure to bring your passport and a valid Ontario fishing license.

Niagara River Temporadas de Pesca

January

The ice is slowly starting to thaw. On the Lower Niagara River, you can hook Steelhead, Walleye, and Lake Trout, especially if you fish the gorge.

February

The annual Roger Tobey Memorial Steelhead Contest is on its way, and the temperatures are slowly rising. You can expect Steelhead, Brown and Lake Trout, and Chinook Salmon at the end of your line.

March
The water visibility is improving, and the Trout and Steelhead are biting. Go home with tasty Brown Trout or, if you're a novice, test your skills against Lake Trout.
April

Both the Upper and Lower Niagara are teeming with good-sized Lake and Brown Trout. This is also one of your last chances to go after Steelhead before they retire until winter.

May

May is a transitional month on the Niagara River. You'll hook into the last of the Steelhead, as well as Yellow Perch. Next month, Walleye season opens so start getting your gear ready.

June

If you were waiting for the best Smallmouth Bass and Walleye fishing, this is your month. The Upper Niagara produces good amounts of Northern Pike, and there’s White Bass swimming around too.

July
You’ll find plenty of Smallmouth Bass and Steelhead in the Lower Niagara, but if you’d prefer to chase Muskellunge and Walleye, then moving south toward Lake Erie is a good decision.
August

The Annual Bass Derby is on the cards mid-August and the Smallmouth action is good on the whole river. It's also a good time to go after Walleye. Start gearing up, next month Salmon come to town!

September

It's officially Salmon season, the happiest time on the river. Chinook and Coho have come to spawn and their ready to bite. These fish are powerful and aggressive so bring your best heavy tackle with you.

October
Salmon fishing is all the craze on the Lower Niagara, and Coho and Chinook Salmon are the stars of the show. In the upper river, Muskellunge and Smallmouth Bass fishing is excellent.
November

Muskellunge season is open until November 30, so this is your last chance to catch a big one. There may still be some King and Coho Salmon lurking about, so hook yourself a royal dinner.

December

Steelhead, Walleye, and Brown Trout – you can catch them all in December. End of the year with a bang and say goodbye to an incredible fishing season.
