(Micropterus salmoides)
Bass fishing on Lake Toho is arguably the reason why many anglers have ditched saltwater fishing. The lake made its way onto the sportfishing map after several Bass records were broken here. While there’s no doubt that a fishing trip in the Gulf is exciting, try out something different this time and take a peek at Florida’s freshwater scene!
There are several types of Bass in Lake Toho, but most anglers are interested in Largemouth Bass. The Largemouth in Florida are fatter and bigger than in other states. Aside from the magic of climate, this is thanks to many anglers practicing catch and release. While it’s legal to keep a trophy fish, many prefer taking a picture instead of taking it home.
When’s the best time to come? Anytime! Lake Toho offers great Bass fishing year round. Winter is said to be the best time, however, since Bass feed closer to the surface when it’s cool. If you’re up for some competition, book a trip in January and try your luck at the “Bassmaster Opens” tournament.
You won’t have to look far to find a local guide who targets Bass on Lake Toho, since pretty much all of them do! Most guides launch from Kissimmee, Wilson Cove, and Friars Cove. If you’re located somewhere else on the lake, it’s always good to ask if they offer pickup – most guides will go a few miles out of their way.
Anglers 16 and older must have a Florida freshwater fishing license to cast a line in Lake Toho, even when fishing with a local guide.
