(Morone saxatilis)
Striped Bass may not get the honor of being in the name, but the Striper fishing Cape Cod has access to is still some of the best in the country. Every year, huge numbers of Stripers come barreling into town, sucking up bait, lures, and flies with an endless appetite. Cape Cod Canal is a shore angler’s paradise, and the coastal waters of the outer cape seem to be custom-built for Striped Bass charters.
But it almost wasn’t this way. Overfishing decimated the Cape Cod Striper population, and only recent regulations have seen the numbers come under control. Stripers are mainly a catch and release gamefish in the area now, although most captains will let you keep you one fish bag limit.
When should I go?
The first wave of big Striped Bass usually shows up in May, which just so happens to be the start of the charter season. You can sometimes find smaller “Schoolie” Stripers arriving early or even wintering in the bay, but the real action kicks off when the big boys show up. A second wave of Cows catches up with the herd sometime in June, keeping the action going well past the summer and even as late as November.
How will I catch them?
Slow-trolling for Stripers is hardly unique to Cape Cod, but local charter guides have certainly perfected the art. Umbrella rigs of cod tubes have been used here for half a century and still get great results. Striped Bass aren’t fussy though. Casting lures or drifting live mackerel can also bring in some sizeable catches, especially in the glory days of early summer.
Fly fishing is the other local favorite and many anglers moved to the area specifically because of its awesome fly action. One thing you should always be aware of is what the fish are feeding on. Around here, that’s mostly Squid or Herring, so match your colors accordingly and go for 3/0 or even 5/0 hooks to make sure bring the big ones in.
How much will it cost?
Cape Cod Striper trips vary in price according to the port you leave from. A good rule of thumb is $100 per hour for a decent boat and a bit more for something fancy. “Half days” can last anywhere from four to six hours here, and “full days” can be as long as ten hours. Not that it’ll feel that long when you’re battling fish after fish along Cape Cod’s beautiful coastline.
What should I bring?
You’ll need a saltwater fishing license, a windbreaker, and plenty of energy. The license you can buy here or at approved sellers locally, the rest you’ll have to rustle up yourself. It’s always a good idea to establish whether you can keep a fish before you start your trip. Most people don’t mind, but some local guides are very protective of their beloved Stripers - and we can’t really blame them.
