From Kilmarnock down to Virginia Beach, Virginia Cobia fishing charters leave from every saltwater port in the state. You’ll hit the productive fishing grounds south of Mobjack Bay and around the entrance to the Chesapeake, so your shortest run is out of Hampton or Poquoson.
Due to the choppy waters, most captains prefer a sturdy vessel. Expect a large offshore sportfishing boat to keep you steady. These professional vessels will come with all you need for a productive day on the water. You’ll use top-of-the-line rods and reels that will give you the edge over the fish as you bottom fish or drift fish.
Unlike in the deeper waters, the Cobia here swim close to the surface. This provides excellent sight fishing fun. Hook yourself up with live bait and cast away! How to Prepare
Despite the fishing in the Chesapeake lasting year round, Cobia are not always present. A migratory fish, they turn up between May and October, so you’ll want to book your charter during the season. Make sure to protect yourself from the sun and bring a cap, shades, and plenty of sunscreen.

The captain and first mate were great. The fish didn’t want to cooperate fully but fish were caught by everyone aboard. Seeing the crab pots worked and then going into the flat to dig clams were also good experiences. So don’t be afraid of trying the afternoon adventure.
