Cobia Fishing in Chesapeake Bay
(Rachycentron canadum)
North America’s largest estuary needs no introduction for anglers who have had the chance to experience this amazing fishery. The diversity of fishing opportunities on offer here is unprecedented. However, for many anglers, it’s Cobia fishing in the Chesapeake Bay that has them coming back again and again. These brutes swarm the waters of the lower bay from spring through fall and they always bring the action with them.
There are many reasons that make Cobia such a popular species to target here, but the main one has to be the adrenaline-fueled battles that this species provides. In addition, fishing for Cobia can be a very different experience based on which technique you’re using on your trip. Chumming and sight casting are your options. While very different, both of these techniques have their unique challenges. Just take your pick.
Although they’re mainly present in the lower and lower-middle parts of the bay, there are seasons when you’ll see a good Cobia bite elsewhere, too. Occasionally the fish will move into Chesapeake’s southern reaches, as well as inshore along the Delmarva coast. Because of this, the hottest Cobia fishing spots can change on any given day. Visiting anglers should make sure they cast off with an experienced captain for a productive trip.
You should be able to find a charter wherever you are in the Chesapeake Bay. The area’s full of seasoned captains who have been fishing these waters for many years. Just keep in mind that Cobia tend to move closer to the mouth of the bay, so charters located in the areas around Cape Charles or Poquoson are a particularly strong choice for a Cobia trip.
