The European Seabass is a close relative to the Striped Bass, native to the USA. It is highly appraised as one of the best light tackle game fish European seas have to offer and one of the first fish to be farmed in Europe after Salmon.
How big
They can grow to over 3ft and 30lbs, but catches will rarely be over 5lbs.
Distribution
This species ranges from Scandinavia to west Africa in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and is primarily caught in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Fish are found mostly in the surf zone, estuaries and lagoons, but are also tolerant of freshwater.
European Seabass spawn out in the sea during winter and return closer to shore by March (or June, for Atlantic fish) when the surf zone gets warm enough again.
How to catch
Most small fish, clams, worms, crabs and squid should work, as well as artificials such as plugs, spoons, various flies and jigs and plastic lures. Depending on how close in they are, they can be cast to in the surf, fly or spin fished or jigged.
Good to eat?
They have excellent food value.
