What to Catch and When to Target it
While fishing in Hilton Head, you could encounter any species of Shark that’s swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. Many species are biting year round, but the biggest Sharks move closer to shore in summer.
Tiger Sharks usually arrive sometime in April. Close behind is a parade of large Bull Sharks, Blacktip Sharks, Lemon Sharks, and more. You can expect to see many Sharks close to seven feet in length, with the occasional monster catch here and there. By October, most of these species start heading offshore.
How to Fish
Fishing for Sharks typically calls for heavy tackle and spinning or conventional rods. It is common to target small species on light to medium tackle and you can fly fish for some species like Blacktip Sharks.
When it comes to bait, the fresher the better. Live bait or cut bait are both effective, and Sharks near Hilton Head are especially privy to Ladyfish, Amberjack, Kingfish, and Cobia. Using circle and J hooks will prevent you from harming the Shark. Some anglers recommend mounting a skirt near the hook to keep the Shark interested while hiding the hook.
