Where to catch Snapper in Perth

There are several spots you want to check out, stretching from just outside Perth all the way to Rottnest Island. One of the most prominent spots is the Five Fathom Bank. It regularly produces Snapper, with the season peaking in June.

You will find Snapper at depths between 20 and over 200 meters. Luckily, there are numerous reefs out of Perth, and that should be your spot number one. Other than that, scout around muddy bottoms along the continental shelf. Little ones (nicknamed ‘Pinkies’) swim around the bay waters, while the adult Snapper swim around the reefs. And, a number of scientific studies has shown that the local fish are longer than Pink Snapper elsewhere in Australia. So, if you want promising fishing action, you know where to head out.

How to catch Pink Snapper in Perth

Pink Snapper feed on worms, crustaceans, algaes, and other small fish. If you want to make the most out of your trip, pack small jigs that mimic their prey and head out.

As for the bait, it’s either Slimy Mackerel, squid, pilchard, or Mullet (aka ‘mullies’). Anglers usually float the bait or sink it just a bit when they’re fishing in shallower waters. If you want to explore deep waters around the nearby reefs, drop the bait at the edge of the reef and do bottom bouncing. It should produce pure magic, that both experienced anglers and kids will enjoy.

What is the Perth Snapper season?

As authorities want to preserve Snapper fisheries, there are a number of closed seasons in Cockburn Sound, Shark Bay, and other important hot spots. From October until end-January, it’s forbidden to fish for Pink Snapper in Cockburn Sound. The Eastern Gulf season for Pink Snapper is closed from May until the end of July, while in the Freycinet Estuary you mustn’t fish for Snapper from mid-August until end-September.
