Snook Fishing in Júpiter
(Centropomus undecimalis / nigrescens)
Some people say that Jupiter, Florida, is the ‘Snook Fishing Capital of the World.’ It’s not difficult to understand why. The sheer size and quantity of the local fish that make Jupiter Snook fishing something to write home about. Why? The protected, sheltered waters of the Loxahatchee River, the inland highway of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the bustling thoroughfare of the Jupiter Inlet all combine together to make this an unparalleled location to catch this prestigious inshore sportfish.
How to Catch Snook in Jupiter
The secret to finding and hooking a Snook in Jupiter is structure, structure, structure. Whether it’s seawall, docks, jetties, bridges, or mangroves, there’s a high probability that it will be guarded by a patrolling Snook. However, if you’re after a really big one, you’ll need to look in the deeper water in Jupiter Inlet.
Tackle up. Live bait is a firm favorite amongst the locals, who swear that croakers are by far the best option. As usual, the bigger the bait, the bigger the fish you can expect to catch, although most successful Snook hookups happen when the baitfish is no larger than about four inches. Pinfish, mullet, and whitebait can also be effective, but if there are croakers in the vicinity, you will find Snook aren’t interested in much else.
As much as live bait is undoubtedly a very effective way of catching fish, there’s something special about casting artificials to a Snook. The added challenge can make everything just that little more interesting. Most topwater lures work well in the shallower waters, with mirrorlures and flies being popular choices. And when it comes to the larger fish in the deeper waters, you can do very well by trolling deep-diving plugs parallel to bridges or bouncing jigs along the bottom.
Snook Fishing Hotspots
The Inlet and local beaches are by far the locals’ favorite places to fish when larger Snook are congregating in the summer. But if you’re looking for some peace and quiet away from crowds and strong currents, you can have a very successful trip in the Indian River or Loxahatchee rivers, too.
