Sturgeon Fishing in Washington
(Acipenseridae spp.)
Sturgeon fishing in Washington is an unparalleled adventure. If you’ve got your mind set on this prehistoric water monster, you probably know this isn’t an ordinary fishing trip. These fish grow to impressive sizes, often over 10 feet, and you need a lot of strength to reel them in. To make things even harder, they’re very aggressive and know how to put up a great fight. Even if you’ve caught one of these before, it’s better to start a trip like this with a professional guide.
Where to Go
You can find Washington Sturgeon all the way up north in Seiku and in the state’s central area in the Chehalis River. But if you want to go right to the source, go to the Columbia River. This river holds the largest population of White Sturgeon, not just in the state, but in the world! You can only cross this fish off your bucket list once you’ve caught one in the Columbia River.
What to Expect
Most fishing guides rely on heavy tackle when targeting Sturgeon. You’ll visit spots that are downstream from rapids and below dams and falls. Soon after you get the first bite, your rod will start to bend very aggressively. It’s important to hold on tight with both hands. If you have a trophy-sized fish on the other side of the line, it will feel like it’s going to pull you into the water. Not every battle needs to be exhausting, but some of them can take up to an hour.
There’s no doubt about Sturgeon being a trophy fish, but this doesn’t mean you’ll get to keep it. In order to preserve the species, there are strict regulations. There are only several days between May and June when you’re allowed to keep Sturgeon in the Columbia River estuary. These dates change every year, so check this with your guide before booking a trip.
How to Prepare
Your fishing guide will prepare everything you need when it comes to fishing equipment. If you’re visiting between January and April, during the rainy season, bring light rain gear and layered clothing. Always check with your guide if he covers snacks and drinks, as this policy differs from one captain to another.
Sturgeon fishing in Washington is one of the most extraordinary experiences you could have on the Columbia River. Come aboard and enjoy the experience of chasing, fighting, landing, and releasing this amazing “dinosaur fish.”
