Tarpon Fishing in Florida

Tarpon
  • Size 25 to 80lbs
  • Food Value None
  • Game Qualities Excellent
  • Habitats Inshore, Flats, Backcountry

(Megalops atlanticus)

Ready to come face-to-gills with the “Silver King” and put your angling skills to the ultimate test? Then going after Tarpon should be your next adventure. These goliaths of the flats are the greatest challenge inshore fishermen can face, and there’s no better place for it than the Sunshine State. If you’re coming here for the first time, we recommend booking a trip with one of the Tarpon fishing charters Florida has to offer.

You’ll find the magnificent Tarpon in inshore waters throughout the state, from Jacksonville Beach to the Panhandle. These acrobats are famous for their powerful headshakes, aerial acrobatics, and size. They can grow to be over 100 pounds. Tarpon are most active in spring and summer (depending on the location), but you can target smaller specimens all year.

While you can book a shorter Tarpon fishing trip and have decent results, dedicating a full day to it is usually far more productive. There are many guides that specialize in targeting Tarpon, and they’ll know exactly where to go and how to put you on the bite.

Practically the whole state of Florida is one big Tarpon fishing hotspot, but there are some destinations that stand out. The Keys, Boca Grande, Biscayne Bay, the Everglades along with the Ten Thousand Islands, Islamorada, and Tampa Bay are just some of the epicenters. All you need to do is pick a location, book your charter, and may your epic Tarpon fishing trip begin!

Rules & Regulations

The most important thing to remember is that all Tarpon are strictly catch and release in Florida. The only way to keep one is if you’re looking to break the IGFA record, but for that, you’ll need a special Tarpon tag. Only one tag per person per year is available.

Talk to you Capt. Get to know what to expect. Fish are fish... They either bite, or swim by. Trust the Capt. To put you on fish that are biting.

If you never been off shore fishing make sure you don't have problems with motion sickness or it will ruin your experience.

Charter fishing is great as well as pier fishing, surf fishing is a little difficult with the gradual beach. March and April seem to be good times of the year.

Get a charter or guide right away. There’s too much water and different ways to do things until you see how they operate first hand.

I am an experienced fresh water fisherman, but I highly recommend a guide to teach you the ways of the Ocean. Some skills transfer, some new techniques are definitely needed.

Enjoy the whole experience not every trip starts the way you think, the weather and tides effect the fish. Enjoy the surrounding, bring some drinks and snack. The captain is working hard for you just be patient he wants to catch fish too.

We really just wanted the fishing/boat experience and weren’t too concerned about catching things. Only my daughter caught a fish but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

I am not experienced fisherman, but going early is better, as you miss the heat. And 100% go with an experienced guide.

No less than 6hr and take steps to ward off sea sickness if you’ve never done this before. We had a good comfortable day on the water, not too rough - but it does happen to some people.

Be prepared to catch 90 % red snapper. They fight hard and make for an excellent experience. Too bad you cannot keep for the dinner plate but that's what happens with the federal government oversight, they make rules that make no sense.

Ask the local bait shops questions if you want to gear up for your trip as they are so friendly and helpful or ask your charter captain questions to help you become a better fisherman while you are on the boat.
