When to go
Fishing for Tarpon around Tampa is one of the ultimate inshore adventures. Tarpon visit the bountiful waters of the bay in May and they stick around until October. Summer months, when they’re migrating into the bay by the thousands, are the best time to land a monster.
Not only is the Silver King one of the strongest fighters you’ll ever have on the line, but the sizes they come in are equally impressive. Averaging at 60–120 pounds, these silvery bad boys will give you a run for your money. If you’d like to get a taste of this Tarpon action, half-day trips that last 4–5 hours are your way in.
In June and July, when Tarpon fishing is at its peak, you can hook 250 lb mammoths. For anglers that are on the prowl for their next Tarpon record, full day trips are a must. With eight or more hours on the water, you get plenty of time to fight the Silver King and go home with some amazing fishing stories to tell.
What to expect
On average, you can catch 3–6 Tarpon per trip, but double-digit hookups are common as well. Whether you’re drifting, baitcasting, spinning, or fly fishing for your next record, the Silver King won’t be able to resist offerings in the form of mullet, crabs, and shad. If artificials are your weapon of choice, think surface and jerk plugs. Tarpon fishing is strictly catch and release, unless you have a Tarpon tag, which allows you to keep one fish per year if you are pursuing an IGFA record.
How to Prepare
The Tarpon fishing Tampa is known for is a feat of strength and wit, not to mention it’s incredibly fun. Virtually every local guide has tricks up their sleeve to put you on the bite, so prowling the waters of Tampa Bay under their vigilant eye is your best chance of catching something extraordinary. I would find out a head of time the allowable length of fish and in-season fish that you can keep. We caught snook and couldn't keep because they were out of season. The trout we caught didn't meet the 15 inch requirement. Even though we enjoyed catching the fish, we were hoping to take some home with us.

Since this was my first time fishing this area, I really didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. There is a wide variety of fish, and they are EVERYWHERE. I don't know how the rest of the year is, but March 2018 was a fantastic trip for me. I caught 20 fish in a 4-hour charter, including four different kinds of fish, and I just finished dinner made from part of my catch.
