Trip Summary
A mixed week of fishing on Sydney Harbour this week. The surface action has slowed but for those willing to search it was still to be found. Winds and tides have been better than the week before. But typical for Sydney, some spots fired while others failed to even spark. The big news is blue water has finally returned out wide. With strong current making finding FAD’s a challenge as they go under. There has also been an noteable number of Mack tuna in the main harbour.
Sydney Harbour Fly Fishing.
With the highs of the last 2 months still fresh in mind searching out fish doesn’t seem too hard. Mack tuna were taking the smallest flies in the box having most success when hauled in as fast as possible or occasionally simply on a dead drift through the water colum. Bream are around most structure and throwing small crab or shrimp pattern on a super slow retrieve will give you the best chance. Had a few fly follows by squid this week. They wouldn't stick on a single hook but food-for-thought next time the fly vice is out.
Soft plastic fishing Sydney Harbour.
As usual bouncing small Grubz or jerkshads on the sandy drop offs is a good way to catch flathead. The Clontarf drop off is producing good numbers early morning with plenty of trevally to add to the mix.
Bait fishing Sydney Harbour.
School jewfish are about in good numbers at the moment, fishing the change of tide and looking for structure or drop offs where these lazy predators can wait for the tide to bring the food to them. Although I did see a whole school of soapy Jews working a large sand flat this week seemed they had there noses buried in the sand searching out something... maybe worms or nippers.. Otherwise drifting fresh squid on the bottom is catching flathead, if you have enough bait to out-last the plague of pinkies.
