Trip Summary

On March 15th, 2019, after fishing only 1 1/2 days, 3 miles off the coast of the Rio San Juan, the Vamos Fishing team of Capt. Randy Rode and Steve Spagnuola boated the first verifiable daytime swordfish taken on rod and reel, on the entire North Coast of the Dominican Republic! In the process of the Quest of looking for the first swordfish the team managed to boat several other valuable and delicious eating deepwater fish, including a local record Queen Snapper and some Mystic Groupers. The team was using highly specialized techniques developed over the last ten years in South Florida and the Florida Keys. Capt. Rode is a native of the Florida Keys. The estimated 85# fish was of legal length according to U.S.Federal Fishery Standards. They were using freshly prepared baits and other techniques unique to the highly technical fishery. The team is now targeting a swordfish of more than 100#s. In a subsequent trip during March, the team hooked up two big fish that were fought for more than 45 mins each, only to have them come off at the boat! But they will continue the quest, until the North Coast of the Dominican Republic is established as a well-known swordfish destination.
