Diggin' for Gold in the cold...

Trip Summary

We had a pretty strong cold front come through overnight before this trip and when we left the dock it was around 59 degrees with winds over 20 kts. For those of us in Florida this is like waking up to snow and freezing temperatures for everyone else. I knew the morning was going to be challenging but definitely doable if we kept out of the wind as much as possible. We made a run south of Sarasota to begin the day. My initial hope was to fish for some Tarpon I have in a backcountry area, but unfortunately it was more exposed to the wind than I would have liked and while a few Tarpon rolled was plain to see that they weren't going to bite. I decided to switch areas and get up along the east shoreline of the bay to try and keep us out of the wind. One the first cast we hooked our first Black Drum of the morning. Over the next hour or so we caught lots of nice Black drum and Sheepshead and an upper slot sized Redfish. We moved back towards Sarasota Bay and fished an area along some mangroves where we caught a few more smaller Redfish and some Snook. Finally we moved along some structure and pulled a couple more upper slot sized Redfish, some Snook, Snapper and Sheepshead to finish out the day.
