Every Fall many of us fishing folk look forward to the first few cool days. Thankfully here in North East Florida we consider it chilly when it hits 70. But with this cooler weather comes something absolutely amazing. Thousands and thousands of mullet make their annual migration from the furthest reaches of the Saint Johns river. This provides some of the best fishing action of the year. The possibilities are endless, from top water jacks and redfish to dragging finger mullet around rocky banks and seawalls for doormat flounder. All of the above provides awesome fun. But one of my personal favorite fisheries comes to light. None other than the Bull Redfish in the 40" class. These brutes provide hot action and put up an amazing fight even on extra heavy tackle. The action stays hot most days with double and triple headers being common! Last week we had to bump down from fishing 3 rods to 2 arms were simply to tired to handle anymore! These trips are the perfect family outings. Anything from Aircraft carriers, pods of dolphins and flocks of spoonbills may show up to provide some excellent sight seeing. Although by catch isn't the most common in this fishery we still pulled up some pretty unique river monsters that would have made Jeremy Wade proud. Last week there were a couple small bull sharks landed on the redfish rod as well as bonnet heads and large stingrays that feel like playing tug of war with a Prius. This run only happens for a few months a year then it is back to fishing the skinny water creeks but will stay good for a couple more weeks. Who wants to go fishing???
