Our guide, Cody, was the best. Very accommodating and laid back. We caught one King Salmon and had a serious bite that got away. Overall, a great time.
We had an excellent experience with King of the River Powerboat on a 1/2 day am trip. It could not have been more enjoyable for me and my 2 kids. We caught about 40 fish (3 Coho) and kept enough for a couple of dinners at our VRBO. Hopefully we can get back to Alaska and fish with them again.
Captain Dean and Steve we’re so helpful. We are new to fishing and they were so patient and taught us well. We really enjoyed our time fishing in Kenai. The water and the views are beautiful. I recommend you take this tour and they are very experienced. I will definitely come back again to Kenai!!
They know their stuff. I’m new to AK and hadn’t fished the style before so basically paid “tuition” to have a fun day learning. Equipment was fine; they knew where to go and what to do - when to wait and when to change things up. I shared a boat with two others. I must have caught 30 pinks for every 1 sockeye, but that’s just what the tides were serving up that day. I’m sure with better timing the ratio could be reversed! My only complaint was that I was under the impression the fillets could be vacuum sealed at the end of the day, but this would take a 24hr turn-around. However, they did suggest a place nearby that was able to get it done with 45min turn-around. There was also one very hard-running fish I’d hooked that felt like a large silver or maybe a king; the other guide walked out, grabbed my line, yanked it like I’d snagged a tree or something, and of course the hook came free. His reasoning was that I’d snagged a fin, which was why it was fighting so hard. However, I’d done that a few times and this was a very different, very fast-running catch that was bolting back downstream as soon as it was hooked. I’ve also caught a large king in open waters before and this run felt very similar. I suspect he’d yanked that line because we were apparently not allowed to *keep* a king on that part of the river. I hadn’t read that in any rule book or update before coming out that day, but trust they would know and be truthful about it. Regardless, I would have liked to fight it for a while and maybe get a look. Maybe I should be more considerate about apparent conservation concerns, but what really bothered me is that he didn’t seem truthful about it. I know what I felt. It was a big runner, I said as much, he insisted it was just a fin-hooked pink, and that exemplifies the subtle sense of disrespect I felt throughout the day in smaller matters/questions/concerns I’d brought up along the way from the my guide as well. One other small example: if I say the hook is getting dull, it’s getting dull. Don’t tell me “it’s not the hook” when we can both see plainly that it’s dull - and such an easy fix to sharpen. But these comments are toward the deck hands (or co-guides or whatever), not the guide service itself. The boss (sorry I forget the name as I type) was a very friendly deaf man who could communicate remarkably well and teach nuanced fishing tips even better! He also seemed to make sure everyone was getting a fair chance if there was a certain hot spot being dominated by another guest, which wasn’t much of an issue but I appreciated the attention for everyone’s sake. Overall, 4/5 would definitely recommend! I’ll be trying other areas and styles next, but if heading back to the river, I wouldn’t hesitate to book with King of the River again.
