on the advertising it should be 7 hours trip, but we left at 12:50pm and back to the wharf at 6:30pm doesnt worth the money, you can find a 4hrs fishing boat on groupon for only $104. its like half of what I paid!
Looking forward to the fishing trip in Australia because we do a lot of fishing in the Pacific Northwest, especially bottom fish such as sea bass, lingcod, halibut and many types of rock fish. After booking the trip, the captain responded very quickly to arrange the pick up point. He sound friendly on the phone and my wife and I were excited to see the technique and species they use in Australia. The pickup was on time. Once we were on the boat, I notice its a very old boat and lot of wear. There were just one deckhand who explain where the toilet is located and ask everyone to not over load it with toilet paper. Then we proceed to the fising area which the deck hand said it will take about an hour 10 minute. The boat didn’t travel very fast eventhough the water and weather condition was very good. It took us an hour 35 minutes to get to the first fishing area. Once the boat stop, the deck hand went to one of the poles in the back of the boat and started fishing. Besides the fishing equipment were in poor condition and too heavy duty for the bottom fish species, do one expain to how to use the fishing pole and how not to tangle the lines with other. Because my wife and I plus another couple are experience fishing folk, its was not a big deal with us. There were 5 other people that had not fish before and did not know how to work the reels and how to jig for bottom fish. Eventually, they copy what we were doing and started fishing. after about and hour or so the I caught two very small fish (could barely feel the bite and fight because of the equipment), the inexperience group caught a small one as well and the experience couple caught a flat fish that was about 12-14 inches long. Then we moved to another area, and fished for about 30 minutes or so. No luck in the second area and some of the people were getting seasick, included my wife who doesn’t normally get seasick in much worse weather and water condition. So, the captain moved again slowly back into the bay area where the water is more calm by a floating light buoy. I notice the captain doesn’t drive the boat in the least distance to the next fishing area. He drive around close to the shoreline and we seem to waste a lot of time sitting in the boat than getting our lines wet. No one caught another fish at the third location after spending another hour or so there. For a 7 hour fishing trip, we sure spent about 60% of the time riding on the boat than fishing. The captain never came out of the cabin or speak with anyone until we drift close to a boat and when asked me to pay for my balance for the trip. After talking to the deckhand when we first got on the boat, he has only work on the boat for 9 months and was not very knowledgeable about the fishing species and fishing area. The captain was suppose to have fish the area for 40 years but could not put us in areas to catch more than 5 fishes in an suppose 7 hour trip. After briefly talking to him while paying him the balance, he said fishing is good all year long here. We got back to the dock at 12:15pm which is 45 minutes less than the 7 hour trip. I understand that Deep Sea Charter is one of the least expensive fishing trip and you get what you pay for. The boat and equipment shows that. Also I understand that not catching lots of fish is part of fishing. However, with no instruction for the guest, no interaction with the captain for the entire trip and seems to spend more time riding the boat than fishing is not a good experience for anyone interested in fishing, especially the beginners.
