Just got back from a half day fishing trip with captain Goran. My brother in law and I took our 18 year olds. We ferried over to Preko from Zadar port which was only 72 Kuna round trip for all 4 of us. Parking at the Port ended up costing only 25 which is also very reasonable. Goran picked us up right at the ferry and communicated well before the trip. This is the 3rd boat we’ve rented in the past 2 weeks in Croatia and the best experience so far. He drove us to a port where they fix boats on the island. It was private and there were ice breaker ships there along with other huge cargo ships. He waved and talked to several people, so he clearly knows everyone here. The boat was small, but a solid vessel and has enough room for the captain and us four. Goran’s English is good and he told us about the boat, the island and his life working on the sea. Unlike the other 2 boats I rented, everything is included on this trip, even the gas. He had beer, wine, water, and fanta for the 18 year old kids.
We rode around the islands to one of his fishing spots and he baited up spinning rods with squid and Sardinia. My daughter caught a few, but it was slow, so he took us to a deeper spot. At this spot we caught enough fish that we got tired and had to stop for a snack. He made a table of bread, his own family’s olive oil, and anchovies of two types that are also local made by his friends. I am not a fan of anchovies normally, but these were excellent. The bread and olive oil was some of the best I’ve had on this trip. We ended the trip with a sunset Cruise back to the pier where we caught the 930 pm ferry back to Zadar old town.
You don’t need your car, so don’t pay to take it to the island. If you get there early, there is a gas station and a couple of coffee shops right there, but Goran will meet you there anyway. I recommend parking in old Town and taking the people only ferry over rather than the larger car carrier from Gazenicka port because the car one to the Gazenicka port doesn’t leave Preko until 10:30 pm.
If you are looking to troll for huge fish all night in hopes of catching a monster, Goran will probably rig up for that, but you will have an unforgettable experience if you let Goran take you fishing the way his family fishes. This really feels like your uncle is taking you fishing and Goran makes you feel like family. We have fished in Cabo, Cancun, Fort Meyers, Destin, Gulf Shores, and Galveston. This is the best trip I have been on, and we didn’t even have to drag our jet lagged bodies out of bed at 4 in the morning.
