The day started off with good weather and a good boat. The fish weren’t cooperating for us to get a bite. We had to stop for fuel on the way out, which I thought should be done before we arrive. This might be a personal preference thing, but I feel as though bait and fuel should be loaded up before the customer gets there. The boat was very clean and the two people operating the boat were friendly. We then got out a little ways and the man asked me what I wanted to fish for. This was a little discouraging as I had told them before hand what I wanted to catch which was anything that we could eat. The crew then asked if I wanted to jig for bonito which is great for bait. We did that for 20 minutes or so and caught one. The captain then asked if we wanted to go catch rooster fish and I said not really because I didn’t want to eat them. We went anyways because he claimed that they were good to eat.(I’m not eating or keeping a rooster. They might be good, but I personally don’t want to harvest that fish.) we trolled for a while and hooked one that got off. That was about the extent of the day. I’m not one to complain about not catching fish, but I will complain when you aren’t listened to as a customer. The company essentially told me that the dorado weren’t biting and there weren’t many fish out there. When I originally contacted them 4 days prior they told me that rooster fish, dorado, and mackerel were. It should’ve been communicated that the bite was slow and the fish weren’t biting. That’s fine and we could make our own opinion on going or not.
My other problem with the experience is that if you know something isn’t biting, then why are you fishing for it. The ocean always has something to give and you take what’s provided. You shouldn’t troll for fish in an area known to be unproductive just for the sake of getting business.
The good: people were friendly, the boat was clean, the gear was operational
The not so good: the knowledge of the crew, lack of communication, boat wasn’t ready, the agility of the operation to switch gears and target other species, they didn’t listen
Overall I would not fish with them again.
