We were visiting family when we booked a last minute trip with Sea J’s Fishing Charters on the day before Thanksgiving. The forecast called for cold temperatures in the morning so we decided on a ½ day trip starting at 1:00 to grab as much heat and sun as possible. We met the captain and his boat at the dock where the engines were already idling and ready for our departure. The winds were calm so Captain Justin decided to give us a special treat by heading out 25 miles in search of premium fishing grounds. No sooner than we got the gear set, the fish started biting. We didn’t have time to think before the first Blue Fin Tuna was on board. This was followed by more tuna and aggressive King Mackerel. Captain Justin kept saying you never know what you might catch in the Atlantic Ocean which was proven true when I reeled in a King which was attacked by a bigger fish on its way to the boat. Needless to say, we ended up with only the head of the King. We also saw an aggressive Barracuda as well as a huge Cobia following one of our Kings to the boat. We even spotted a shark in search of an easy meal. After some successful trolling, we switched to bottom fishing which resulted in a beautiful, out-of-season Red Snapper but we ended up catching Black Sea Bass and Vermilion Snapper. It was non-stop excitement and energy on the boat and Captain Justin was the perfect host on his brand new Sea Hunt boat with twin 250 hp Yamaha’s. He kept our hooks baited with squid, whole sardines and large cigar minnows. Our hands, arms and muscles were sore from all of the fish we caught. The boat was in perfect condition and it made me confident of our safety. Plus, it had a clean head area with flushing toilet for my wife. This is one feature I would recommend for any charter on the ocean. Captain Justin had a designated guest cooler for beverages and any food we wanted to keep cool. In the end, we never had time to eat or drink except for the times we moved for a new drift. He even kept a baited rod in the water as we moved areas which proved to be fruitful with several Kings being caught with this method. These particular fish were caught on light tackle which is such a thrill! The attached video was one of those fights on light tackle. It was so nice to be on a fast, clean, top-notch boat that allowed us to get to the fishing grounds quicker than most other boats. My wife and I would highly recommend Captain Justin. Rather than work for someone else, Captain Justin recently decided to start his new, independent fishing charter business and I am confident anyone that books a trip with him will find a similar experience. Captain Justin is not new to fishing in North Carolina but he is very focused on providing a unique, better-than-expected fishing experience.
