Our fishing trip for Big Reds and Trout with Capt. Keith Logan on “Logan’s Love” was a GREAT trip. Capt. Keith was in touch with us a couple of days prior to our trip to check our schedules and coordinate our times for fishing. On this trip he was able to adjust our departure time to correspond to best weather conditions. For a two person trip, Captain Keith’s combination of experience and skill accompanied by great equipment was perfect for us.
Keith got us started by collecting some live bait by cast net. We then began probing the inshore weed banks for trout. The bite was slow so we proceeded to the Little River inlet. There one of Keith’s associates (a separate boat also fishing here) shared some larger bait with us and we proceeded to fish along the rock faces of the inlet for Big Red’s with spinning rods equipped with braid line and fluorocarbon leaders. We were enjoying the day, the weather was cloudy and there was a bit of a chop on the water, but the wind was reasonable, about 6-8knots. I was sitting mid-ship trying to keep the slack out of my line when, all of a sudden, I felt a WHIRR of the reel, YES, “FISH ON”, the bait had been HAMMERED, which was about a 6-8” menhaden bait and it was “FIGHT ON”. Initially I was not sure I had a Big Red…I thought I might have a shark or ray since the pull was quite heavy, but the line held and the fish made numerous runs, pulling line off the reel with blinding speed. At each pause I would try to gain ground little by little, winding in the line. I did not want to pull so hard as to break the line, fortunately Capt. Keith had set the drag well and I am sure that helped me during the fight. I think I must have had about a 30 minute battle with small gains and numerous power runs before we got to see the Big Red surface! Wow what a “BIG” fish!! …and so PRETTY it was. Capt. Keith said this fish was “almost” as big as his record for a Big Red in this area…Okay, I’m happy with that. A Hog trough scale would have been useless.
We wanted to get this beautiful fish back in the water with as little stress as possible so we did not weigh or measure her, but…with this fish on my lap I was nailed to the seat and I am sure she was pushing over 50lbs, and 50”inches in total length. What a great experience!!! My friend nailed another big fish, probably even bigger than mine and after about 30 minutes of struggle, the line broke, or was chewed off, before we got to see exactly what was on…it just gave him one heck of a fight and a sore arm.
After all that, weather was approaching, we headed back to the inshore grass beds and creeks to pick up a few other fish… trout, croaker, spots. What a day!
The courtesy, experience, and skill of our Captain could not have been better. Captain Keith’s “GPS position holding trolling motor kept us locked in our fishing positions with little or no effort (a big, big advantage)! We will definitely book with Captain Keith again! Super trip Captain Keith!
