What to Expect
Newer Anglers
Thanks to its sun-drenched beaches, friendly inhabitants, and tradition-steeped temples, Bali is the perfect tourist destination. This is great news for budding fishermen, as local charter operators are well-experienced in running trips for newbies. If you’ve always wanted to try out deep sea fishing, where better to wet your line than alongside one of these friendly, patient captains?
A popular starting point is Candidasa Beach, located on the eastern side of Bali. The waters here start reaching depths of 200 feet and more around 2 miles from shore – and it only gets deeper the further you travel!
Combination trips are common here, so if a full day of deep sea fishing sounds intimidating, many captains will have you switching it up with some swimming or snorkeling. You can opt to spend a few hours learning how to cast off, and still have time to target Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, and more. Once you’ve had your fill of fishing, jump in these azure waters and experience them from a whole other angle!
Experienced Anglers
Deep sea fishing in Bali isn’t all about the newbies, though. If you’re an angling aficionado who wants to hook your own personal best catch, this island has plenty to offer. You’ll find plenty of local charter captains willing to take you out to hotspots further afield, where the seriously big fish like to play.
A “must-visit” destination for hardcore fishermen has to be the southern tip of the island. Most charters in this location are concentrated around the capital city of Denpasar, and for good reason – travel just 15 miles from its shore, and you’ll soon reach waters thousands of feet deep!
This area is a prime hotspot for huge Mahi Mahi, and it’s common for captains to cook your catch up right in front of you once you’ve won your battle. Tremendously-sized Tuna are also a common target, and Billfish fans won’t be disappointed either. The most common deep sea technique here is trolling, but ambitious anglers should enquire about more traditional techniques – how does handlining for a Marlin or two sound?
How to Prepare
Local charter captains will make sure you’re hooked up with all the fishing gear you need for your trip, and you won’t have to worry about your fishing license, either. It’s common for trips to include some swimming or snorkeling, so make sure your swimsuit is never very far away! Get ready for a deep sea fishing adventure that’ll leave you convinced that heaven really is a place on earth – and it’s called Bali.

The waters were beautiful, but I had bad luck, as it was terribly rough on my trip. Turns out, we almost had a tropical storm form. Typically, the waters are calm. Just hope for good weather!

The area is beautiful but has been destroyed by foreign commercial fishermen. You still have a great chance at catching fish but! Just remember fishing is about fishing otherwise itd be called catching.
