Pesca con Arco Fishing in Texas

The Lone Star state was once famous for being the gunslinging wild west, so it only makes sense that some of this tradition lives on in one of its most unusual fishing techniques. If you’re an experienced angler looking to cross the “final frontier” of hooking fish in weird and wonderful ways, or are a total newbie simply craving a truly Texan experience, then there’s only one option to consider: bowfishing! Combining the best parts of archery, hunting, and fishing, bowfishing in Texas will see you using all of your skills and wits to hook your catch.

Which charter is right for me?

Texas is home to the vast Trinity River, which is often considered by hardcore anglers to be the best bowfishing destination in the US. Lakes around Corpus Christi and Houston, as well as tributaries that feed into the Gulf, also provide ample opportunities. Bowfishing is reserved purely for inshore fishing grounds, meaning you’ll travel less and fish more. All you need to do is pick what you want to target, and how long you want to be out on the water for.

For Beginner Bowfishers

Although it might seem intimidating at first glance, you don’t have to be an expert to try out bowfishing. In fact, you don’t need any fishing experience at all! Some charters are targeted toward keen bowfishers, but you’ll find just as many for inexperienced anglers, and families with children.

If you fit into this category, a saltwater bowfishing trip might be just the thing you’re looking for. This will allow you to target tasty, family-friendly fish such as Flounder, which is a great “first catch.” As this species loves shallow waters, a half day trip allows plenty of time for some angling action, as you won’t have to travel far. If you’re traveling with little ones who might be spooked by a nighttime trip, daytime bowfishing is also an option!

For Anglers Who Want a Challenge

If you want to get your fill of bowfishing, and target a prehistoric predator, then head to one of Texas’s freshwater fisheries. You’ll find charters waiting to take you to inshore waters, where you’ll be finessing your skills against Alligator Gar!

Many anglers travel from far and wide for the chance to hook a trophy-sized version of this species – imagine the bragging rights you could earn by bowfishing for one! Give yourself a full day out on the water with an experienced captain, and this could be within your grasp. More time means you’ll be able to travel further, while perfecting your skills against many “trash fish,” such as Carp, that inhabit these waters. They make for great practice!

What should I bring?

You’ll need to purchase your own fishing license before your trip. When it comes to bowfishing equipment, make sure you speak to your captain in advance: Some provide part, or all, of the equipment, whereas others expect you to bring your own. If this is the case, don’t worry, it’s pretty simple. Once you're ready to take aim, come explore the final frontier of fishing in the Lone Star state!

September can be spotty in this area depending on Temps, currents, wind and moon phase. Be sure you book with the right charter to ensure a good time. Fishing addiction definitely took care of us.

There is a LOT of quality water in the area. I particularly like wade-fishing the flats, and there are literally thousands of acres available. We had perfect weather. Not crazy hot, beautiful water temperature, and lots of fishing opportunity. Highly recommended.

The best white bass fishing is lower part of the lake south of Hwy 190. Fishing around the old hwy 190 and some of the submerged lakes are good spots. Get a topical map of the lake.

Let your Captain know exactly what you want when you board. If you want inshore for an hour or two and then shark for the rest, he’ll accommodate. Great trip!

I would recommend Aransas Pass because it is away from the tourist crowd of Port Aransas. We stayed in PA but vying for a fishing trip there was crazy. Easy access to the harbor in Aransas Pass.
