Every fly angler wants to come over and test their skills against the fish here, especially the large Baltic Salmon!
What to Expect
There are plenty of options when deciding where to fish. The northern part of Sweden is vastly different to the southern part. Luckily, there are fly fishing opportunities across the country.
Around 60 rivers here have Salmon swimming through them at some point during their migration. The Byske River is a highly popular river to fish for Salmon. Other top spots include Lagan and Indalsalv Reservoirs, Torne River, Indals, and many more. Experienced anglers will enjoy targeting the large Baltic Salmon on rivers that head into the Baltic Sea. These huge fish will really test your lines.
It’s not just about the Atlantic and Baltic Salmon in Sweden. There are also plenty of Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Arctic Char, Grayling, and more to target out in these clear waters. Head to Indalsälven River for a great fishing day – you won’t be bumping elbows with other anglers here.
Need to Know
Fishing regulations in Sweden can get complicated. The waters are privately owned and leased out to visitors. It’s best to fish with a guide who not only knows where to go, but understands what license is needed and what the fishing limits are for that area. Fortunately, when you fish with a guide, the license will be provided.
Fishing gear is usually included in the price of the trip, too. If bringing your own, come prepared to make adjustments depending on your target species and the location you’re fishing in. Overall, an 8’ 4 wt rod is a good all-rounder. This is best for dry fishing. A 9’ 5 wt rod is good when you need that extra reach. If bringing your own landing net, you’ll need a cotton knotless one.
“Ecological angling” (voluntary catch and release) is highly encouraged throughout Sweden.
How to Prepare
Always check the weather for the area you’re heading out to. The north and south have very different climates. You could be enjoying fly fishing in the south while other anglers are still ice fishing in the north!
You’ll want to wrap-up warm, with waterproof layers, waders, and wading boots. Don’t forget your mosquito repellent and sunscreen, a hat, and you’re good to go. Remember Sweden is predominantly cash-free now, so make sure your bank card works abroad before traveling.
Fly fishing in Sweden will open new horizons for you and maybe even become the main reason for visiting this beautiful country in many years to come.
