The fly fishing Southern California has to offer anglers is pretty epic. Whether you’re just learning how to fly fish or have been on the water for years, there’s something for everyone in the “Golden State.” When booking a charter in SoCal, choose you target species first before heading out – this will help you decide where to book a trip and which charter will be best suited for you.
Lakes and Creeks
There may be dozens of rivers and lakes in Northern California, but SoCal has a lot to offer anglers, too. Head toward Deep Creek or Santa Paula Creek for some top fly fishing. Other hotspots include Castaic Lake, which is known for its big bites, especially of Bass. For Trout fishing in Southern California, book a trip to Lake Cuyamaca, Lake Hodges, Lake Arrowhead, or Lake Wohlford to name just a few.
The Bays and Inshore
Beginners will enjoy fishing San Diego Bay and Mission Bay – these bays are protected from the elements and offer calm waters. Inshore waters are home to schools of bait fish that attract larger game, allowing for top fishing without going too far from shore. Top species you can target include Calico Bass, Yellowtail, Mackerel, Barracuda, Bonito, and Sandbass. Mako Sharks are fantastic to fish for, but should be released once you’ve taken a photo to keep the population up.
The piers are also productive to fish. Head to Santa Monica Pier and Crystal Pier for excellent fly fishing for Calico Bass, Mackerel, Surf Perch, and much more.
Offshore
Saltwater fly fishing is best left to the experts – this will test your skills, your sea legs, and your line! A top saltwater fly fishing hotspot is found up to 100 miles from the San Diego shoreline. Book an overnight trip fly fishing for Yellowfin Tuna to get the most out of the long journey out.
How to Prepare
Everyone in your group over 16 will need to have a fishing license with them on board.
An offshore saltwater fly fishing trip that heads into Mexican waters will require everyone on board to have photo ID on them, as well. The captain will let you know if you need a Mexican Tourist Visa.
Do something out of the ordinary with your next vacation and try fly fishing Southern California waters. From rivers and creeks to 100 miles offshore, you’re sure to find the perfect trip for you.
