North Texas
Home to the famous Galveston Bay system, this part of the state has one of the strongest reputations around when it comes to Flounder fishing. The waters here tend to get pretty muddy, which means there’s ample opportunity for Flounder to conceal themselves against the ocean floor! Sabine Lake and Matagorda Bay are also hotspots for gigging.
Central Texas
Rather than the murky, muddy waters of north Texas, here you’ll find crystal clear, shallow fishing grounds – perfect for newer anglers who want a quick education in spotting this sneaky Flatfish on the seafloor! Rockport in particular has long been a Flounder mainstay, with a plethora of warm, shallow waters that this species just loves.
South Texas
South Texas is home to the vast, intimidating Laguna Madre. Picture the world-famous flats of Florida, but on a much larger scale. Everything is bigger in Texas, after all, and these inshore fishing grounds more than prove it – as do the Flounder you’ll find!
What do I need to know?
The best time to gig is in autumn, when cooler waters mean that Flounder come flocking. However, be aware that this technique is prohibited throughout November.
Texas requires all anglers over the age of 17 to purchase a fishing license from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. This usually won’t be covered by your charter, but it’s a simple process that can be completed online.

Big Tex Fishing Charters
April a little early in the season for reds, some days good, some slower. Fishing improves in May and red hot in June and July. Good fishing for reds until December but they move around. Incredible lake! We live in NW SA and were home in a half an hour. Incredible!
