What to Expect
This face-to-face combat is not for the faint-hearted, as you come up against some real monsters of the sea.
In the skinnier waters inshore, you can go after beauties such as Redfish, Snappers, Speckled Trout, and Permit. Head a little bit further out, and you’ll come into contact with bigger Snappers, Groupers, Cobia, and even Mackerel. The real pulse-racing adventures happen in the deep waters offshore as you target predators like Tuna and Mahi Mahi.
You’ll be able to cover the inshore fishing grounds on a half-day trip, with the option of combining it with some conventional fishing on a full day trip. Nearshore trips can also last anywhere between 4–8 hours.
But if you want to head offshore, you’ll need a full day or longer. Some trips last as long as a few days, letting you get your fix of fishing and spearing to fill the boat with some delicious meat.
Where to Go
With over 3,300 miles of coastline, it’s tough to decide where to go spearfishing in Texas. Most of the usual fishing haunts have charters that offer spearfishing, so you’re in luck.
Galveston Bay
Galveston is a famous inshore fishing spot and it excels in spearfishing, too. You’ll find a spearfishing charter at any of the marinas from Baytown to Freeport, offering you the chance to hit the shallows or the nearshore waters for a range of exciting and delicious fish.
Aransas and Corpus Christi Bays
In the center of the coastal bend, Aransas Bay and Corpus Christi Bay offer year-round fishing opportunities, and spearfishing is no different. While most of the action is focused on the bays – with Redfish a favorite target – you’ll also have the best chances of finding an offshore spearfishing trip here.
Padre Island
Towards the border with Mexico, the Padre Island National Shoreline is another angling hotspot. With warm weather year-round, you can hop in whenever you like and target a range of exciting fish. As the islands act as a barrier from the Gulf to the mainland, most charters will have you exploring the inshore waters with plenty to keep you entertained.
How to Prepare
Before hopping aboard a Texas spearfishing charter, you’ll want to make sure you have all the gear. While some captains may provide spearfishing gear, most require you to bring your own speargun or pole and snorkeling or scuba gear.
Other than that, just bring everything you would for a normal fishing trip. Make sure to respect the conditions and dress appropriately, bring some food and drinks and snacks aboard, and – most importantly – grab your TX fishing license.

Big Tex Fishing Charters
April a little early in the season for reds, some days good, some slower. Fishing improves in May and red hot in June and July. Good fishing for reds until December but they move around. Incredible lake! We live in NW SA and were home in a half an hour. Incredible!

Don’t hesitate it was worth it captain Mike definitely knows his stuff on the water highly recommend using him definitely would dress warm. I was remember you can take clothes off you can’t put clothes on if you don’t have them it was chilly. That was one thing I wish my son would have done was dress a little warmer lol other than that great time great memories
