The spearfishing Southern California offers is as exciting as it is varied. Some of the species that you can spear for include California Halibut (not to be mixed up with its northern cousin, the Pacific Halibut,) Calico Bass, White Seabass, California Sheephead, Lingcod, Barracuda, Yellowtail, and plenty more.
What can I expect?
Whether you’re a beginner spearo or a seasoned one, there is a trip out here for you. The lengths of the trips can range for 3–12 hours. The trips can specifically be for spearfishing or you can request to spear on regular trips. Let the captain know ahead of time if you wish to spearfish instead of using a more conventional method on your trip.
As well as the inshore reefs, you should definitely check out the kelp forests. Located close to shore, these underwater masses attract plenty of fish for you to spear. This is due to the large populations of bait fish that call these kelp forests home.
How to Prepare
On most charters in SoCal, you’ll need to bring along your own gear or rent some once you get there. Dive gloves should be a minimum of 3 millimeters and dive socks 4 millimeters. Depending on your experience and which fish you’re targeting, guns can be anywhere from 60–90 centimeters for beginners and 100–130 centimeters for large targets.
It’s best to spear with a guide who can keep you informed about what species are allowed to be targeted, the size regulations, and where the Marine Protected Areas are. If you’re fishing without a guide, you must be aware of all the rules and regulations for each species before heading out – ignorance is never an excuse, and will result in a fine.
When taking a boat out on a spearfishing trip, only spearfishing equipment is allowed on board. You should also have your license on board at all times – everyone over 16 and under 65 should have a license. Your captain can advise whether you need an Ocean Enhancement Stamp or not on your trip.
There’s no better time to go spearfishing in Southern California. With so many guides to choose from, you can have a fun and safe day in the water while hunting for your dinner.
