Fishing in Méjico
Mexico fishing charters tick all the boxes on most anglers’ sportfishing bucket lists. From its winding mountain rivers, across the vast lakes, to its two oceans and multiple seas – you won’t know where to look when choosing where to go! This country’s angling opportunities are so vast, that there’s something for everyone.
We’ll start with the bluewater bite. The Pacific’s bays offer up prime Calico, Corvina, Seabass, Jack, Snook, and Roosterfish action. Head to the Caribbean and Gulf side, and it’ll be Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon. Wherever you are, the reefs will offer up Groupers and Snappers, with pelagic monsters such as Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish, and Striped, Blue, Black, and White Marlin on offer around the country!
When it comes to freshwater fishing, Largemouth Bass is the name of the game in most places. However, Catfish, Carp, and even exotic creatures like Rainbow Bass, and Tilapia are on offer in some spots. Your best bet for finding a freshwater charter is on the lakes, with Mexican fishing guides few and far between on the rivers.
With so many fishing grounds, it’s no surprise that Mexico fishing charters offer a range of options. In some places, such as the Sea of Cortez or Riviera Maya, the big game action takes place just a few miles from shore. That means that a trip as little as four hours could land you a trophy! However, usually, you’ll see shorter trips tailored to families and beginners, and trips between 6–12 hours for the more experienced.
Reglas & Regulaciones
If you’re fishing from a boat in Mexico, then you’ll need a license. These are often covered by your charter, but not always, so it’s worth checking before you go. Each angler can keep a maximum of five fish in freshwater, and ten in saltwater. However, you can only have five of each species, and one Billfish counts as half your daily limit.

Our captain Ramon and his first mate worked super hard to make sure we caught fish. We trolled going out and then switched over to spot fishing where we had the most luck. Caught dorado or mahi mahi, snapper, mackerel, trigger and trumpet fish. We were blessed with a great captain and a beautiful day!

This was a great introduction to Puerto Vallarta fishing. We were out the perfect amount of time and our boat was outfitted perfectly for our family. The Captain pulled out the awning and that was wonderful for relaxing out of the sun. We didn't catch many fish but the other boats the Captain checked in with that were fishing the bay were having a slow day as well. That's to be expected with fishing. Overall, a great day out in the bay!

Fishing on a boat like La Princesa is a very worthwhile experience. Captain Francisco is knowledgeable and is very helpful. He, as I'm sure all the captains will put you on fish and help you catch fish. These trips are child friendly, no experience friendly, and experienced fisherman friendly. Another plus is not only is it fun to catch the fish, but they taste wonderful. It's a worthwhile experience for a day.

La Princesa Fishing Trips
It is best to book an 8hour trip, if possible, to have more time to catch in case its a little slow. You can always go in early...but had we only been on a short trip, we would not have time to catch that 2nd marlin. Sometimes fishing is great but I think it was a bit slow because of the weather, but it was a great time!

Take Dramamine 30 minutes prior to leaving. We got seasick during our trip which was no fault on the crew. They were very understanding and helpful. We still ended up catching a lot of fish and they made fillets for us to take back to our resort where the chef cooked it! Very cool experience. For what we paid, the boat was probably very reasonable, but in the future we might like a little roomier boat. Our crew was awesome!

We had a great time with El Capitan. The fish don’t cooperate, but we managed to get a huge barracuda and a mahi mahi. I highly recommend Alondra III. The captain worked his but off for us this trip. The ceviche at the end was the best I’ve ever had!

We went out with Black Moon fishing and had a blast the crew kept us entertained. We had probably 10 misses while trolling but we able to catch a very nice Wahoo in the end. Would definitely recommend and fish with them again

Had a great time today fishing. Boat was clean and comfortable. Captain and assistant were experienced and did their best. We caught one big mahi mahi. Was so good. Always hoping for more fish but that’s what it’s all about. Only critique is we were supposed to leave at 6:30 and left after 7:30…they made up the time but I personally like to be on the water early for the morning action.

Johnny was incredibly supportive of us (first-time anglers) and gave us a great experience. We caught skipjack, roosterfish, and a big Dorado which we took to pier and had filleted and cooked.
We also saw a mother and calf whale, and a sea turtle.
Would definitely recommend booking with Johnny and team again!

Things got slow about halfway through, but then Eduardo saw a bunch of birds in the distance diving the water. We moved over there and caught corvina after corvina. it was pretty amazing . When we looked over the boat we could see schools of hundreds of fish and it was super cool! Eduardo doesn't speak much english, but knows the waters very well, and is a super chill guy.

The captain was a great communicator. They accommodated our cruise times and met us at the dock. Boat was well organized and equipped. The mate, Miguel, was very skilled and kept fresh bait on while we trolled. We hooked one sailfish and caught three mahi mahi. Captain shared with us the name of a restaurant, Alberto’s, that made ceviche and tacos out of our mahi mahi. Great experience. Only downside was diesel fumes.

The Capt did a good job of scouring the area for fish. A slow afternoon bite resulted in one marlin sighting, one yellowfin tuna in the livewell, and some fun with the local sea creatures on the way back in.

Went on a half day (am) trip and was amazing!
Best trip anyone could ask for.
We left on time, they made it fun, and worked their tails off to get us on fish.
We were able to land a 98" striped marlin and a 60" wahoo.
Was such a great trip and couldn't even express how happy we are with this trip!

We did the half day 12:30pm-5:30pm in late April and it was great. We were able to catch four mahi mahi and a few others! Know the morning slots might be better for fishing but the crew made it so fun and helped us have the best trip.

Alex was very accommodating and picked me up at my hotel. We drove to the marina north of Cozumel and boated to the mangroves. Within 10 minutes of anchoring, caught 2 bone fish… the day carried on like that, I lost count after awhile. Lots of fun. Caught a few snooker too. Alex supplied drinks and snacks and was very conscious of how the fish were responding. One of my most memorable experiences. Will be hard to beat this one.

The crew was great! They set me up with a taxi from our resort for us. We targeted marlin and caught a big blue marlin! Everyone spoke great English and did a great job with communication as we reeled the fish in for almost an hour. Would definitely recommend these guys if you are trying to find a deep sea charter in Tulum!

Capitán Raul knows what he’s doing! Bad weather made it a bit harder to fish, but such is the time of year. End of April isn’t prime fishing time in this area, but we were still put on good numbers of cabrilla and pargo! The Capitán is excited about his trade and knows where to go! We will be back…
