For reference, I worked on a boat out of the San Diego area as a teen in the 1990s. I’m now 48 years old, live in North Carolina, and have fished my entire life but have never caught a billfish. Having caught dozens of tuna, dorado, and a few wahoo over the years, a billfish has always eluded me.

I booked a half day for the family which includes my wife, 15- and 10-year-old girls. We let the captain decide where to fish and what to target, they could have taken us just outside the bay and fished the bottom and save on gas; however, we headed offshore to troll. What a great decision, within 5 minutes of setting the spread, a monster sailfish hit the left teaser and the crew jumped into action. The fish bounced from bait to bait in the spread until the first mate fed a naked ballyhoo back to the fish and we were hooked up. After a good fight, I landed the first sailfish of my life, a 126-inch fish – a true trophy sail! We trolled for an hour or so and got a double hook up of big sails and my 15-year-old landed her first sailfish and I had my second of the day. Unfortunately, my 10-year-old wanted nothing to do with the second fish in the double – she thought she’d get pulled overboard. The captain kept working the waters and found us a pod of dolphins working a bait ball with yellowfin tuna crashing the bait ball as well, we hooked four and landed two. You won’t go wrong with this crew – absolute professionals who know the waters and how to handle novice fisherman. I can’t wait to go back, and this boat will surely be the one I book.

Our trip was great. We fished with Capt. Angel and mates Alan and Beto. Alan spoke good English which made the trip easier even though we didn’t expect the mates of a different country to speak English. Mates were super accommodating with fresh fruit, lunch, and plenty of refreshments. They were patient and assisted young anglers. Fish were plentiful, as we landed 7 nice yellowfin tuna and 3 that came unbuttoned at the boat. Beto made fresh sashimi and soy for everyone which was amazing. Hard working and didn’t stop working hard till it was time to head to the hill. Highly recommend if you’re wanting a hard working crew to assist with catching quality fish. Alex, Betto and Angel were awesome. The taxi boat was easy to find, it’s a little green boat that pulls up to the beach and communication before the trip was very easy through this site and what’s app. Alex was the main guy and he spoke very good English and was very easy to hold a conversation with. Betto and Alex worked the deck and Angel drove the boat, he is a phenomenal captain. The day started off slow. We started fishing after maybe less then an hour once we got out far enough. The first two hours we hooked up to 1 mahi that spit the hook and one sailfish. We got the sailfish to the boat and the leader snapped before getting a picture so I was a little bumbed as it was my first ever sail fish. Angel and Betto did a great job keeping our spirits up and making the best of a slow morning. Then BOOM, sailfish on. I got my first sailfish to the boat, got an awesome side picture. Alex even taught me how to release it and that was awesome. Then within minutes another sailfish, my wife brought this one in! After that we ran right into a school of mahi and the fishing did not stop. Alex and Betto were extremely calm and patient as at one point we had three fish on at once. My wife and her sister fighting fish on one side I’m on the other side, Alex and Betto running under the lines, helping everyone, gaffing, unhooking. They even let me jump in to help and gaffed a mahi. The fishing did not stop for hours. We hit another sailfish after that then Alex found a school of dolphin, which he informed us would have tuna near by. We landed 4 tuna to end the day fishing right up to 3 o’clock. Alex and Betto cleaned all the fish on deck and packed it all up. It was a smooth ride back to playa herradura. We took only what would feed us and our friends that night and gave the rest to the crew. I would highly recommend this crew to anyone looking to have a good trip. The crew is also on the younger side so they are probably a bit more fun then some of the older captains, just a hunch. Overall an amazing time and we’ll worth the cost!!!!! Pura Vida

Hooked Up worked with our schedule and wishlist which was greatly appreciated. We enjoyed our day of fishing with Capt. Angel and mates Petro and Christian. Everyone worked hard, fast and efficient. We caught 2 Tuna, 2 Mahi and 2 skipjack and we tried hard for Sailfish. Boat was as advertised and just what we were looking for and the fresh Sashimi was amazing. I would recommend for your day out.

Originally booked a half day following a full day to focus on inshore species. The captain recommended a spot to go for more sailfish instead and he did not disappoint. Ended our trip with a couple more sailfish (in addition to the ones caught the previous day) and had a great time. Only wish we had caught some yellowfin to take home but can’t help that. What a great half day
