March has been one hell of a month as far as weather goes. We've had a few nice days but most of the time the winds have been kicking up in the 20 plus mph range. This just makes it a little difficult to fish a lot of inshore spots and definitely prevents us from doing any offshore trips. Now don't get me wrong, we've still been catching a lot of fish but it's just been a little more challenging at times. Most of the fishing we've been doing lately has been inside the lagoon just trying to find cover. We're catching a lot of smaller speckled trout with a mixed bag of redfish, jack crevalle, and ladyfish. We're using some artificials but mostly popping corks with live shrimp. The sheepshead fishing around the bridges has been pretty good as well. Sheepshead are some of my personal favorite eating inshore fish and a challenge to catch. Sebastian Inlet is always a go to spot for catching something. If the ocean is to rough outside the jetty we've been drift fishing the channel catching some big bull reds and a whole bunch of jack crevalle. Local Floridians give jack crevalle a bad rap but they are pound for pound one of the hardest fighting fish around and will definitely wear your arms out. To tell you the truth, I've had many of my customers in the last couple years decide to take home some jacks. Everyone has said they are fantastic tasting so who knows maybe us Floridians are just spoiled. The snook bite hasn't been all that great for us lately, we've been in somewhat of a slump on catching any big snook ever since the season started. Hopefully this slump will end soon because I want to start ringing that bell.

So far February has been a chilly and windy month. The fishing has really been hit or miss from day to day. Mother nature just makes us work for our catches during these times. The water has been chilly, some days down in the 50's. Yes I know, you northerners think this is hot weather but me being 100% a native Floridian feel the same way the Florida fish do, it's dam cold. The inshore bite has been pretty good for the smaller seatrout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, and sheepshead. The snook really get bothered by the colder water and really don't want to eat at all. We've rolled up on schools of 10 to 15 big 35" to 40" snook in 2 ft of water that just won't touch anything we throw at them. We've been catching most of the trout on popping corks with live shrimp, fishing the deeper channels near the mangroves. We're also having good luck with trout and reds throwing artificial, Slayer Inc. paddletails and Slam Shady paddletails. My favorite bait to catch those slot reds is just a chunk of mullet. It's hard to find any fiddler crabs at the bait shops for sheepshead but those little bitty live shrimp will do the trick as well. Sebastian Inlet has been pretty consistent with big bull reds while drifting on the incoming tide. If it's calm enough to get outside by the north jetty the snook have been hitting a little on the outgoing tide along with lots of bluefish and Spanish mackerel.

Well..... Here we go starting off a new year, hopefully everyone had a great holiday. The fishing has been ecstatic the last few weeks. We've caught lots of fish and broke some new personal best records to end the year. The inshore bite has been off and on in the lagoon. The bait is plentiful all throughout the river. Lots of finger mullet, pilchards, pig fish and pin fish. The fronts are messing up the bite a bit though. Some days are a little slower than others but that's fishing. We've caught some nice reds, snook, and trout along the mangrove shorelines and the spoil islands using live shrimp on popping corks and chunks of mullet. These are the areas you gotta have patience for. Lots of casting and moving if you're using artificial or just sitting and waiting if we're still fishing. Sebastian Inlet has been spectacular when everything lines up. There has been tons of action on bluefish and Spanish mackerel. A few flounder and pompano too. When the bite is on the big bull redfish are all over you. The snook have been there but like usual picky as all hell. Night has been the best for snook at the inlet the past few weeks. We also had a good tarpon bite right before new years eve right outside the inlet. Surprisingly some of the big Goliaths are still hanging out around the north jetty. You'll see them under the boat on an outgoing tide just waiting for you to hook one of those snook. Unfortunately the Goliaths haven't learned the regulations yet ?. Offshore has had some excellent fishing lately. The waters have been quite warm for this time of year. We've been catching some solid cobia hanging with the sharks and numerous amounts of snapper (mangroves, Lanes, and muttons) on our bottom fishing trips. Not only that there have been kingfish and mahi being caught in 60ft while trolling pink/white and blue/white skirts with ballyhoo.

Santa is being very generous with the fishing lately, the fish are biting and the coolers are filling. Some of my customers might be having fish for Christmas dinner instead of turkey this year. We've had some cold fronts come in which has chilled the water down a bit in the lagoon and the ocean but it hasn't stopped the fish from biting. The lagoon is producing decent amounts of slot reds as well as some smaller snook fishing the mangrove shorelines and not to mention numerous amounts of spotted seatrout. Sebastian Inlet has been pretty hot lately, the big reds are hanging around for the holidays and slot to over slot snook are being caught pretty consistently. Flounder season is open now and I've seen some decent size doormats and a bunch of medium size flounder being caught. Spanish macks and bluefish are also stacked up in and around the inlet. Offshore has had a fabulous snapper bite this week. Some of the lane snapper we've caught are the biggest I've ever seen. There are also quite a few other species hanging around like big mangrove snapper, cobia and kingfish. I've talked to some other captains that have been catching mahi out around 150ft while trolling. We usually don't do many offshore trips during the winter due to the rough seas though. There are a few days still open for December but January is wide open for bookings. Well, ladies and gentlemen Captain Shane is back in action again. Been down for about 10 months waiting on a new engine to come in from Suzuki but it's here and we've been hitting the saltwater. From September through November is my favorite time to fish the Indian River. Bait is normally plentiful and the big fish are hungry. We've been doing a lot of scouting the last couple weeks just trying to get back in the saddle again. Caught some decent snook, reds, and trout along the mangrove shorelines. Finally got to jumped in the mix at Sebastian Inlet the other day and landed some solid stud bull redfish. November aka Blowvember as I like to call it, is living up to it's name as the month gets started. The winds are starting to kick up and the temps are dropping this weekend with a little cold front. The colder temps should start pushing the flounder up into the inlet but unfortunately the FWC has closed the harvest of flounder from October 15 to November 30, so no door mats for Thanksgiving. Well..... it's been an interesting past 6 months. I'm literally still waiting on the new engine to come in. Supposedly the world is in utter chaos due to Covid 19 and nothing can get shipped out or built but whatever life goes on. Anyways down to fishing, I recently inherited/acquired another boat to use while I'm waiting on my new engine to come in. It's a 21ft Maverick Flats boat with a 225 hp Yamaha Vmax. It's been a little tough getting back in the swing of things as well as juggling a full time job doing airboat tours at Camp Holly. We've done a few inshore/nearshore trips in the last few weeks and things have went pretty decent. In this flats boat I'm limited to what I can do with her but we've still been able to produce some decent fish. We've caught some nice sea trout, snook, goliath grouper, kingfish, flounder, snapper, blue runners, and small sharks. If the seas are real nice, we've been able to get out to some of the closer reefs catching snapper, kings, and flounder. If the seas are rough it's been drifting the inlet for snook, redfish, and jack crevalle, or fishing along the mangrove shorelines for snook, redfish, sea trout, mangrove snapper, etc... From what I've been told, hopefully the new engine will be in by the end of the month or mid August. The new airboat is also in the process of getting finished and hopefully that will be getting done about the same time the engine comes in.
