Last minute weekend trip to the Keys with my family. My 15yo son has dreamt of trying his hand at sight casting on the flats and back country out of Islamorada. We reviewed several captains and selected Capt. Larry based on his profile. Full day trip - almost all flyfishing. We ran out, hit a flat with some sharks and a few boils of bait…saw a snook and some mud boils…then settled in blind casting an edge along the mangroves for snook. Larry was waiting for me at the dock and we were off out 10 minutes early. Tide wasn’t on our side the first couple of hours and Larry worked very hard to get me on the fish. I went flats fly fishing with Captain Larry on Nov 3. He is a very pleasant guide with very top of the line skiff and equipment (perhaps why he is on the expensive side compared to others). I wish I could give a better report as not only did we not catch any fish, we didn’t see one fish or even cast one time. Of course “That is why they call it fishing and not catching” but still was a disappointing day. He did give me a quick casting lesson which was helpful.

So glad to see Dave had a realistic attitude about fishing and not catching, because it is so disappointing when the fish cannot be found or do not cooperate. Dave was very nice to have on my boat, and all I can say to anglers is a half day goes by so fast, and this time of year it’s just not enough, because I would like to travel out over into the Everlades further to find fish and a 4-hour half day just doesn’t allow it. I have since this trip and a few others that were similar discontinued... Más

Captain Larry got us on the flats right away, and I got to check a bonefish off of my list, which has been a goal of mine for some time. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. If we ever come back down to the keys again, I will be sure to book another trip with him.

During the second half of the trip, Captain Larry found multiple opportunities for me to cast to Tarpon. My casting skills prevented me from presenting the fly into the right spot, but the thrill and anticipation of those opportunities will keep me coming back. The first thing I’m going to do when I get home is practice casting!
