Full day deep sea trip
VERIFICADOCaptain Aaron Thomas took myself and 5 others out for a bachelor party - full day deep sea fishing trip. He communicated via satellite phone the previous day about the potential of bad weather and high seas however the conditions cleared up in time for an enjoyable trip. We started at 4 am (I recommend getting to the dock 30 minutes early) with a quick in cabin talk with the captain and the mate to explain what we could expect, where we would go and approximately how long we would be out. Additionally, he laid out a plan in case the fish weren’t biting. The Ocean Hunter arrived at Poor Man’s Canyon at approximately 0700 to start trolling for tuna, after about 4 hours of trolling and no bites Captain Aaron and the First Mate Nick decided to bottom fish (with our consent). They reeled in all the trolling gear and set out for deeper waters. At 800’ we dropped the electric rod for Golden Tile, within literal seconds we got our first bite of the day, up came a Rosie! As promised bottom fishing landed us a little excitement and some pictures too. A few Rosies later we had our first Golden Tile of the day and also the largest catch of the day a 35-40 lber. Our crew of heathens and (inexperienced fishermen) quickly grew tired of hand reeling 800’ lines and opted for shallow drops. The Captain and Mate took us to a 300’ spot and again within minutes got bites of Blue Stripped Tile. We bottomed fished for about 2-3 hours and caught 18 fish included a Hake. Captain Aaron was dead set on fishing us a big fish to reel in so he guided us back to trolling. For the remaining 2 hours of the day we hopelessly trolled for a big bite. with most of the party asleep the Captain and Mate tried their hand at hooking a tuna to no avail. To be fair though there were several other sport fishing charters in the area we were fishing, when we got back to the marina, only 1 yellow fin tuna was caught that day. In the future if we ever got serious about tuna fishing we would book a trip in early June based on the water temperature explanation Captain Aaron gave me. We headed back to the marina in slightly higher seas at our back with an overall easy cruise. When we arrived back at the marina, they filleted our catch and bagged them for travel. I would recommend The Ocean Hunter for any group looking to have a fun time at an affordable price with an easy going Captain and Mate. Both The Captain and Mate Tirelessly explained how the boat electronics work, what and why they us the tackle they deploy and another fishing related questions we could fire at them. The Boat is a 50+/- year old Cape Hatteras Sport Fishing Vessel, it is in good condition and rides smoothly on 2-4’ seas. I would pack lightly, the is enough room to bring a 40-65qt cooler however there is a mini fridge on board that can handle most of what you bring. The price is significantly more affordable than most other charters that catch the same fish. Book with the Ocean Hunter and help support a Captain that is really passionate about fishing and helping people have fun.
